Taking a giant leap from military service to the business world, Yan Xijun has in a matter of 19 years created a high-tech conglomerate that believes in the “oneness of human beings, along with nature, human enhancement and longevity” and aspiring to “share the joy of health with all”.
In 1989, Yan Xijun began to engage in medical equipment management and pharmaceutical research at the People’s Liberation Army 254 Hospital. Five years later, he founded Tasly from scratch with several pharmacists from the hospital. Within eight years after that, he completed the enterprise’s restructuring and, within ten years after leading the company to a public listing, he has increased its market value tenfold to RMB51.6 billion as of July 2013, making the company the second most valuable listed pharmaceutical company in the country. It has ranked first among the Top 20 Most Competitive Listed Pharmaceutical Companies in China for two consecutive years (2012 and 2013).
He took the lead to put forward a new concept of “modern TCM” and to expand in the industry at a high starting point. The company’s knockout product, Compound Danshen Dripping Pill, became the first compound TCM product to complete FDAPhase II clinical trials in the United States and enter Phase III investigations; marking it the company’s modern TCM products have gained comprehensive international recognition in R&D, production, clinical assessment and quality control. Under his leadership, Tasly, which started from TCM modernization, has achieved the grand transformation into a high-tech conglomerate with “the great health industry as the main line, the bio-pharmaceutical industry as the core, and the health care industry and the health management and service industry as its two wings”, with a commitment to building a more comprehensive business cluster in the great health industry.
On the way to industry leadership, Yan Xijun is committed to social charity causes, such as social relief, earthquake relief, and cultural conservation. He has led his company to take part in important national industry programs including the Western Development Program, the revitalization of the old industrial bases in Northeast China, and China Glory causes. Meanwhile, he has also played an active role to invest in remote areas, creating jobs for local people, and promoting local resources development, industry upgrades and economic growth.
