TAL Education Group - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
In 2003 when Zhang Bangxin was attending graduate school at Peking University, he had 7 part-time jobs to earn a living. Encouraged by his success as a tutor, he started Xueersi, a primary and secondary after-school tutoring services provider in China from scratch. In 2007, he concentrated on the development of Xueersi. Zhang made a bold decision to drop out of school when working on his PHD at Peking University. From a single tutor charging dozens of yuan for one class, to an educational institution that provides services for more than 500,000 students and has generated revenues of billions of RMB each year, Zhang and his startup team have enjoyed huge success.
By creating the “Xueersi1 teaching model” and building a professional teaching research and development team that parallel his professional teaching team, Zhang has upgraded the competitiveness of his company. Besides, maintaining the development strategy of “quality comes before scale,” Zhang initiated a new model in the industry of after-school tutoring to win greater recognition from customers: open class and refunds available at any time. In addition, Zhang has led the team with continuous upgrades in combining internet technology and traditional education.
Within less than 10 years, Xueersi has completed a series of developments including: expansion, financing, going public and diversification, becoming a leader in the primary and secondary after-school tutoring market across China. With a constant rise of its market value since its public-listing in 2010, Xueersi has won an outstanding reputation in the capital market.
1 The company changed the Chinese name to “haoweilai” in August 2013.
