Young Tax Professional of the Year 2014

Be tomorrow’s tax talent

EY’s Young Tax Professional of the Year is an international tax competition created to recognize and develop outstanding young talents who are interested in tax. The competition also gives participants the chance to share experiences with people from a range of backgrounds and cultures.

In the region of Greater China, all the candidates from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan were invited to participate in the local competition before entering the Greater China competition. The first prize winner of the Greater China competition will then be engaged in the international competition.

Greater China competition

In April 2014, all Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan winners from the local competition were invited to compete at the Greater China competition which took place in Shanghai. They had the opportunity to meet with leading figures in the profession and have started to build an influential network for them. 

Finalists were given a case study involving international tax concepts and they were invited to do an individual presentation to a panel of judges.

The winners for Greater China competition were:

  • 1st prize winner: XU Teang, Cosmo (Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong)
  • 2nd prize winner: LO Ya-Chi (National Chengchi University, Taiwan)
  • 3rd prize winner: SONG Weixing (Xi’an Jiaotong University, Mainland China)

Cosmo Xu, 1st prize winner for EY Young Tax Professional of the Year - Greater ChinaCongratulations to Cosmo Xu of Hong Kong! Cosmo was announced as the ultimate winner of the Greater China competition. He will represent Greater China to participate in the global final Young Tax Professional of the Year in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, between 30 November and 4 December 2014.

Greater China competition prizes

  • 1st prize:
    HK$20,000 cash and a 4-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in the Greater China. The winner will represent Greater China to attend the international competition which will take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, between 30 November and 4 December 2014 (flights and accommodation included).
  • 2nd prize:
    HK$10,000 cash and a 4-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in the Greater China. The awardee will be the stand-by representative for Greater China at the international competition.
  • 3rd prize:
    HK$5,000 cash and a 4-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in the Greater China.

Result of Mainland China competition

The Mainland China Young Tax Professional of the Year 2014 final competition was held on 15 March 2014.

The winners for Mainland China were:

  1. DONG Yan,  Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
  2. FAN Zimei, Central University of Finance and Economics
  3. SONG Sijia,  Tsinghua University
  4. SONG Weixing, Xi’an Jiaotong University
  5. TANG Jiaying, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies
  6. ZHOU Huan, Xiamen University

Mainland China local competition prizes

Six final winners were provided a 4-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in Mainland China offices and representing Mainland China in the Greater China competition in Shanghai (flights and accommodation included).

Result of Hong Kong competition

The Hong Kong Young Tax Professional of the Year 2014 competition was held on 4 April 2014.

The winners for Hong Kong were:

  • 1st prize winner: CHAN Lok-Ling, Loretta (University of Hong Kong)
  • 2nd prize winner: XU Teang, Cosmo (Hong Kong Polytechnic University)
  • 3rd prize winner: FONG Hei-Yin, Adrian (Chinese University of Hong Kong)

My Favorite Presenter Award co-winners: XU Teang, Cosmo (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) and LAM Ki Wai, Steven (Hong Kong Baptist University)

    HK$8,000 cash, a 6-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in Hong Kong and representing Hong Kong in the Greater China competition in Shanghai (flights and accommodation included). 
  • 2nd prize:
    HK$6,000 cash, a 6-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in Hong Kong and representing Hong Kong in the Greater China competition in Shanghai (flights and accommodation included).
  • 3rd prize:
    HK$4,000 cash and a 6-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in Hong Kong. 

My Favorite Presenter Award:
HK$1,000 cash.

Result of Taiwan competition

The Taiwan Young Tax Professional of the Year 2014 final competition was held on 28 March 2014.

The winners for Taiwan were:

  • 1st prize winner: LO, Ya-Chi (Natinal Chengchi University)
  • 2nd prize winner: CHENG, Chien-Tzu (Natinal Chengchi University)
  • 3rd prize winner: CHENG, I-Wen (Natinal Chengchi University)

Taiwan competition prizes

  • 1st prize:
    TWD 30,000 cash, a 6-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in Taiwan and representing Taiwan in the Greater China competition in Shanghai (flights and accommodation included). 
  • 2nd prize:
    TWD 20,000 cash, a 6-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in Taiwan and representing Taiwan in the Greater China competition in Shanghai (flights and accommodation included).
  • 3rd prize:
    TWD 10,000 cash and a 6-week paid internship or conditional offer of employment with Tax Department of EY in Taiwan.

International competition

The Young Tax Professional of the Year 2014 competition will take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, between 30 November and 4 December 2014. During the four-day international final, the successful country finalists will work closely with people from other cultures and backgrounds.

Participants will be challenged with case studies and interviews before expert judges. The finalists will be invited to a prestigious awards ceremony where — after a final review of performance throughout the competition — the three winners of the Young Tax Professional of the Year Award will be announced.

International prizes

  • 1st prize:
    A 30-day round-the-world business trip built around 10-day working visits to key EY Area Tax Centers in London, Washington D.C. and Hong Kong.
  • 2nd prize:
    A 10-day visit to one of EY’s Tax Centers. 
  • 3rd prize:
    An invitation to take part in one of our exceptional EY international client conferences.
