Ernst & Young officially launches Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year China 2008

Nominations open from now until July

22 May 2008, Hong Kong -  Ernst & Young today is proud to officially launch the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year China 2008. The prestigious business awards program is open for nominations until July and seeks to celebrate outstanding business leaders who inspire others with their vision, leadership and achievement. Those interested are advised to submit nominations early owing to the stringent selection and judging process.

Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year China is part of a global program dedicated to rewarding the world’s most innovative and inspiring business leaders. As one of the most globally recognized awards of its kind, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year rewards those who are building and leading successful, growing and dynamic businesses, recognizing them through regional, national and global awards programs in more than 135 cities in 50 countries.

David Sun, Ernst & Young China Chairman and Country Managing Partner, says: “In the past three decades, China’s stunning economic reforms have unleashed an unbridled enthusiasm for enterprise, with thousands of Chinese entrepreneurs starting their own businesses and building them into market-leading organizations. At Ernst & Young, we believe successful entrepreneurs deserve recognition for their achievements and the contribution they make to their people, the economy and the communities in which they operate.”

Dr. David K. P. Li, GBS, JP, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the Bank of East Asia, will chair the Independent Judging Panel. He will be joined by other judges comprising past winners and business leaders and academics. Sam Wong, Regional Managing Partner for China Central, Ernst & Young, and Philip Leung, Partner and Strategic Growth Markets Leader for the Far East Area, Ernst & Young, will act as Program Co- Chairmen for the 2008 program.

“Philip and I are delighted to act as program co-chairmen in this exciting year of the Beijing Olympics. The awards honors bold entrepreneurs who achieve success in business by aiming higher, by having the courage to lead, and the tenacity to stay the course. China’s economic success in the past three decades would not be the same without them, and so these awards salute those who lead China’s most dynamic and ambitious companies,” says Wong.

Wong adds: “Following the huge success of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year China awards in the past two years, we want to encourage entrepreneurs across China to participate. The awards can help winners raise their profile globally, and offers potential networking opportunities through their induction into the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Academy, a prestigious club of elite business leaders.”

The judges expect to confer awards for various industry categories, as in past years. From these category winners the judges will name two Country Winners, one for mainland China and another for Hong Kong/Macau for their outstanding contributions through their entrepreneurship.

All recipients of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year China 2008 award will be inducted into the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Academy. The China Country Winners will go on to represent China at an international awards ceremony in Monte Carlo mid-2009, where they will vie for the prestigious Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year title.

Dr. David Li says: “The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year awards provide an excellent platform to showcase China’s talented business leaders to the world. Since Ernst & Young first included China in its annual review of entrepreneurship in the year 2006, I have been very impressed with both the achievements of China’s leading entrepreneurs and the thoroughness of the review process conducted by Ernst & Young team members. I am therefore delighted to have been invited again this year to serve as Chairman of the Independent Judging Panel. May I extend my very best wishes for success to all contenders for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year China 2008 awards.”

Monica Wong, Chief Executive, Asia, HSBC Private Bank, says: “Entrepreneurs take many forms but the virtues they share are the same nonetheless - vision, leadership, determination and passion. These virtues are ones to be celebrated and The E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Awards allow us to do so as we take this opportunity to recognize the unique individuals who have been the force behind China's unprecedented growth. The contribution of these entrepreneurs are not just the businesses they create. The greatest gift they impart is their entrepreneurial spirit. It is this spirit that continues to drive innovation, inspiration and excellence. In fact, there is no greater legacy to leave behind than that which allows you to know that anything is possible.”
