Press release 2009 - New partners announced in the Irish firm - Ernst & Young - Ireland

Ernst & Young appoints new Senior Partner to Irish firm and announces 169 new partner admissions in EMEIA

1 July 2009

Ernst & Young has today announced the appointment of Mike McKerr as Senior Partner of the firm's Irish business. Mike will succeed Paul Smith who retires having completed his third term in this role. The announcement comes as the regional firm today reported the admission of 169 new partners - including 3 across its Irish firm - with immediate effect. These new partnerships will be located throughout the organisation in all service lines and industry sectors as well as across its Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) area.

Mike who is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants is aged 44 and joined Ernst & Young in 1986. He has held a variety of senior positions including Senior Partner at Ernst & Young’s Belfast office, Head of Transaction Advisory and Head of Markets in Ireland, a role which saw him managing the firm’s all-island market leadership strategy.

Commenting on his appointment Mike said “It’s an honour to be asked to undertake this role. These are very exciting times for Ernst & Young’s Irish practice. We have recently launched our first economic initiative looking at the all-island economy as well as celebrating our first year as part of an integrated practice within EMEIA. Our business continues to develop despite the difficult market condition and we are determined to build on its core strengths, providing the best possible service to our clients.”

Mike’s new role leaves a vacancy in the firm's Transaction Advisory Business, which is to be filled by Adrian Brown as well as a vacancy for the position of Belfast Office Managing Partner which is to be filled by Michael Hall.

Adrian joined Ernst & Young’s Belfast office in 1992 and is currently a Partner in Ernst & Young’s Private Equity team in London. With his lead advisory and due diligence experience, Adrian brings strong impetus to his new role, one which is designed to focus on growing Ernst & Young’s corporate finance presence in the all-island market.

Michael joined Ernst & Young in 1997 and is currently head of Ernst & Young’s Northern Ireland tax practice. He brings with him a wealth of experience advising shareholders and businesses on tax implications and opportunities arising from business re-organisations (domestically and internationally), cross border tax structuring as well as managing several business admissions to the London AIM market.

Continuing to invest in new partners

Commenting on the 169 new Partner positions, Mark Otty, Area Managing Partner for Ernst & Young in EMEIA, said: “We expect these outstanding individuals, whose performance and accomplishments throughout their careers have led to their admission to the partnership, to really make a difference in their new roles to help us capitalize on our current opportunities while laying the foundation for future growth.”

Mark adds, “These admissions underline our commitment not only to reward excellence and help people achieve their full potential, but also to continually invest in the future of our organization. Today also marks a significant milestone in the integration of our Area, as this is the first year of our new single, EMEIA-wide partner admission process.”
