A visionary leader, a teacher, a scientist, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist -
Dr. Desh Bandhu Gupta is an honorary Doctor of Science with a Master’s Degree in Chemistry and the founder Chairman of Lupin.
His dream and vision to fight life-threatening diseases by manufacturing drugs of the highest national priority led to the formation of Lupin in 1968 with a start-up capital of INR5000. His inimitable commitment and pioneering spirit has steered Lupin into becoming a US$1.3 billion global generics powerhouse; an innovation-led transnational pharmaceutical company with leadership in cardiovascular, CNS, diabetology, asthma, pediatrics, anti-infectives across key markets globally, with a clear global leadership position in anti-tuberculosis and the cephalosporin antibiotics segments.
Lupin has the unique distinction of being the fastest growing top 10 generics players in the two largest pharmaceutical markets of the world – USA (ranked fifth and growing at 52%) and Japan (ranked ninth and growing at 20%). The company is also the fastest-growing, top five pharmaceutical players in India and the fastest-growing generic player in South Africa (ranked sixth, growing at 36%).
With his vision to contribute to nation-building and social development, “DBG,” as he is fondly called, set up the Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation (LHWRF) on 2 October 1988. LHWRF has now succeeded in revitalizing and redefining life in 2,200 villages across five states, touching the lives of over two million people.
Dr. Gupta’s noteworthy achievements can be attributed to both his spiritual and scientific temperament. He is a trustee of the Global Vipassana Foundation and is also the Chairman of the managing committee of ISKCON. He was felicitated with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pharma Leadership Summit 2009 for his contribution to the Indian pharma industry.
