The Newsreel, EY's newsletter on the media and entertainment (M&E) industry.

Farokh T. BalsaraIndia’s M&E industry has been seeing increasing M&A activity across all the media segments. In the TV broadcasting space, Star India is looking to buy out minority stakeholders in Asianet. In the TV distribution space, Hathway has acquired the remaining stake from Dainik Bhaskar in theirJV and IMCL has bought a small cable operator in Kolkata. In the film exhibition space, Inox Leisure is planning to initiate talks to buy out Fun Multiplex, following the acquisition of Cinemax by PVR. Furthermore, the marketing services segment has witnessed an increasing number of acquisitions, particularly in the digital advertising space, with several agencies consolidating their position in the market.

The industry has been seeing increased activity in regional and niche markets, with several companies significantly expanding their presence in these markets. Reliance Broadcast Network has launched a Bhojpuri channel and Spoorthi Communications a Telugu news channel. Kasturi & Sons, the publishers of The Hindu, are also looking at the option of foraying into the regional space with the launch of a Tamil daily; the Mathrubhumi Group is planning to invest in a regional news and music channel.

The filmed entertainment segment witnessed significant action last month, with as many as three co-production deals being executed. Eros International has signed a co-production deal with Endemol and also entered a strategic tie-up with Multi Screen Media to co-produce films and Yash Raj Films has signed its first co-production deal with filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee, clearly indicating that companies in this segment are looking at co-production deals to scale up their operations.
