Harishanker (Hari) leads our Indirect Tax Practice. Hari qualified as a Masters Degree in Chemistry, but became a licensed customs broker and streamed into indirect tax consulting. He has been an entrepreneur, has hands on experience in the industry and Big 4 for over 25 years.

Hari has advised and assisted various multinational companies on resolution of import pricing at arms length on customs special valuation representations, export incentive programs, besides assisting in setting up of Export Oriented Units (EOU), Software Technology Parks (STP) and Special Economic Zones (SEZ). He also holds expertise in advising EPC companies for bid evaluation on contracts and highlighting the key impact from an indirect tax perspective. He has been involved across diverse industries namely oil & gas, automotive, telecom, information technology, media & entertainment, infrastructure & real estate, advising clients on cross border transactions, tax structuring, tax efficient supply chains and so on.

Pranav Sayta

Pranav has more than twenty five years of experience in the practice of Direct Tax Laws. He specializes in advising on various international tax matters, inbound and outbound transactions, cross border and domestic mergers, acquisitions & joint ventures, group financial and corporate restructuring, and international tax planning.

He has addressed and presented papers at various seminars and conferences organized by various professional and industrial bodies. He is presently a member of the Executive Committee of the IFA India Branch and Chairman of the the Western Region Chapter of IFA India.

Pranav has been consistently rated as one of the leading tax advisors in India by International Tax Review & by the Legal Media Group Guide to the World’s Leading Tax Advisers. Pranav is a Gold-Medalist Chartered Accountant attaining first rank at All-India level. He was also awarded the prize for the Best paper on Direct Tax Laws by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Ravi Mahajan

Over the past 22 years, Ravi Mahajan has gained wide experience in direct (domestic and international) and indirect tax matters relating to multinational and domestic clients in a wide range of industries, especially Technology, Professional services, infrastructure, mining and oil and gas industry. His area of expertise include Inbound and outbound investment structuring, structuring cross-border transactions in the context of Double Tax Avoidance Agreements and other international tax planning tools. Ravi has spoken at and attended several seminars and conferences in India as well as abroad.

Satya Poddar

Tax Partner, Policy Advisory Group, Ernst & Young

Prior to joining EY in 1987, Satya was Director of the Tax Analysis and Commodity Tax Division in the Canadian Ministry of Finance, where, he played a lead role in the design of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and ongoing review and reform of the personal and corporate income tax system. He has undertaken major research projects for the European Commission on topics related to the application of VAT to financial services and to public bodies.

Satya serves as a tax policy expert to the Harvard Institute for International Development, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank and has participated in their technical assistance programs in Russia, India, China, Indonesia, Kenya, Ghana, Rumania, Gulf Cooperation Council, and Bulgaria. He has been actively involved in policy discussions on reform of consumption taxes in India and has been advisor to the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, the Central Ministry of Finance, and several State Governments.

Satya holds post-graduate degrees in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, McMaster University and the Delhi School of Economics. He has written a number of papers on tax policy matters and regularly writes tax columns for the national newspapers.

Shyamala Gopinath

 Former Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India

Shyamala Gopinath is the former deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) a post she held from September 2004 to June 2011. She joined the RBI in 1972, and has worked in diverse areas and different capacities including Executive Director of the RBI from June 2003 until her elevation to deputy governor. She also served for two years on deputation to the International Monetary Fund.

Sudhir Kapadia

Sudhir is Partner & National Tax Leader at EY in India. He joined EY in 2008 as Technology, Communications & Entertainment (TCE) Tax Leader and became Tax Markets Leader in 2009.

Sudhir has vast experience in advising large multinational companies in relation to their inbound investment strategies and domestic companies in relation to their outbound investment strategies, including tax efficient supply chain and transfer pricing. Sudhir is closely involved with Private Equity, Financial Services, Technology, Entertainment and Infrastructure sectors in advising them on tax and regulatory issues.

Prior to joining EY, Sudhir was the National Tax Leader at KPMG in India. He is a Chartered Accountant with over 25 years of experience. He has been speaking at key national and international events and contributes to thought leadership in the areas of international taxation. He is a regular speaker on major tax forums and has contributed through articles on tax & policy matters for the national newspapers and trade journals.

Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar

Swaminathan Aiyar is a prolific columnist and TV commentator in India, well-known for a popular weekly column titled “Swaminomics” in the Times of India. He is the author of Escape From The Benevolent Zookeepers - The Best Of Swaminomics (New Delhi: Times of India, 2008) and has been called “India’s leading economic journalist” by Stephen Cohen of the Brookings Institution. He has been the editor of India’s two biggest financial dailies, The Economic Times and Financial Express, and was also the India correspondent of The Economist for two decades. He has frequently been a consultant to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. Swami spends part of the year in India and part in the USA. He holds a Master’s degree in economics from Oxford University, UK.
