EY has announced 13 top nominees for the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013 Malaysia awards. This short-list was determined after careful reviews including personal interviews, and an independent judging process. The top nominees are:

Dato’ Chevy Beh is the Group Managing Director of BP Diagnostic Centre Sdn Bhd.

Initially, a dormant company in the BP Healthcare Group founded by Dato’ Chevy’s father, BP Diagnostic Centre became active in 2004 after Dato’ Chevy joined the Group.

Dato’ Chevy officially took the helm of BP Diagnostic Centre in 2009 and under his leadership, sales increased dramatically. He introduced innovative business models to provide affordable quality healthcare and rolled out BP’s own brand of products and medical devices. Dato’ Chevy has also been the driver behind the expansion of the company’s business and the introduction of new services.
Today, the company operates 50 diagnostic centres, each of which operates as a one-stop centre for health checks, and employs over 1,000 people, over 70% of whom are professionals from the health and medical services.

Community service is an important part of Dato’ Chevy’s mission. He has introduced programmes to support and serve the community, including sending specialists to conduct free health screenings and educate the public through health talks.

In 2012, Dato’ Chevy was awarded the Most Promising Entrepreneur Award at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards. He was also invited as a panellist and speaker in the Forbes Healthcare Conference in New York.

Bryan Loo is the Managing Director of Chatime Malaysia. When he brought the Chatime brand into the region in 2010, he envisioned a more modern tea culture and believed he could alter how Malaysians drink their tea. He saw the void between the traditional coffee shop set-ups and posh high-tea rituals, and decided to fill it.

Under Bryan’s leadership, Chatime is now the top lifestyle tea beverage brand in Malaysia.

Bryan deeply believes in product localisation and has successfully collaborated with AirAsia, GSK Horlicks and WeChat, among others, to make Chatime’s beverages more accessible. In 2012, Chatime Malaysia became the first lifestyle tea brand to be served on board Air Asia flights, allowing international travellers and Malaysians to enjoy the lifestyle tea without visiting a physical outlet.

Bryan also believes in supporting the local arts community. He has developed Chatime Galleria, a series of purpose-built concept stores for art projects. He has also collaborated with Malaysian artists in an art exhibition in conjunction with Chatime’s 100 Outlets Celebration, and launched the Chatime Friends Programme to support and promote budding art talents.

Chatime opened its 100th outlet in Malaysia in July 2013 and is currently expanding into East Malaysia.

Dato’ Calvin Khiu was raised by his grandmother in humble surroundings. To help his grandmother earn a living, he worked odd jobs on a part-time basis. At the age of 12, he worked at a fun fair and at the age of 13, he worked as a hawker in a night market. He then worked as a LPG delivery man when he turned 17.

At 19, Dato’ Calvin worked as a sales person selling curtains. His hard work and determination paid off when he earned his first million at the age of 26.

Dato’ Calvin established the MK Curtain Group in 2005. Today, the company supplies a wide range of home furnishing products that target the middle-income consumers. Under Dato’ Calvin’s guidance and leadership, the company now has 25 chain stores nationwide. It is his vision to grow MK Group into a household name in the Malaysian home furnishing industry.

In recognition of his success, Dato’ Calvin has received a number of awards including the Golden Bull Award as one of Malaysia’s 100 Outstanding SMEs, the JCI Creative Young Entrepreneur Award and the SME Recognition Award 2012.

Her Chor Siong was appointed Executive Director of Cuscapi Bhd in 2006 after a successful M&A between Cuscapi Bhd and Adeptis Solutions, a company Her founded.

Cuscapi provides technology and infrastructure solutions for the F&B, retail, hospitality, automotive, financial, telecommunications and public service industries.

Under Her’s leadership, Cuscapi was transformed into a regional player with nine direct offices in South East Asia and China between 2010 and 2011, serving more than 20,000 restaurants in the region.

The international expansion strategy grew Cuscapi’s revenue by more than 100%, registering a CAGR of 14% between 2006 and 2012. During the same period, Cuscapi’s international revenue contribution grew from 3% of total revenue in 2006 to 46% in 2012, making it the largest F&B management solution provider within the restaurant segment in South East Asia and China.

Her continues to grow Cuscapi through innovative product development and aggressive regional expansions. He envisages establishing more than 15 direct offices in Asia and Middle East by 2015 with more than 70% of its revenue derived from the overseas market.

Cuscapi transferred to the Main Board of KLSE on 4 September 2013 after meeting the required financial track record since 2010.

Daud Ahmad is one of the co-founders of Cypark and has been CEO of Cypark since 2001.

Passionate about green energy and its positive impact on environmental sustainability, Daud has played a strategic role in transforming Cypark into a renewable energy power producer. He is also the driver behind Cypark’s many accomplishments in the sustainability arena including the award-winning Taman Beringin Safely-Engineered Landfill Restoration Project in Kuala Lumpur, 16 Safely-Engineered Landfill Closure Projects in Peninsular Malaysia, five Renewable Energy Parks (including Malaysia’s largest award-winning grid-connected 8MW Solar Park and 2MW Biogas in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan) and Clean Development Mechanism Projects (Taman Beringin Landfill Kuala Lumpur and Jabor-Jerangau Landfill, Johor).

Daud was also a key initiator of the Solar PV Industry Alliance (SPINAL), a grouping of industry players, higher learning institutions and research institutions with the aim of fostering strategic cooperation among solar PV industry stakeholders. To instil awareness of the importance of renewable energy and environmental sustainability, he has also designated Cypark’s solar park in Pajam as a renewable energy education hub where it now receives on average 200 visitors per month for a tour of Malaysia’s energy future.

Ivan Teh founded Fusionex with the vision of overcoming major industry challenges and solving the most complex problems faced by companies and conglomerates through the development and innovation of more “humanised” and intuitive software and technology.

At incorporation, Fusionex did not possess any track record, brand presence or funding. Nevertheless, with steely determination, Ivan persevered, almost exhausting his personal savings to fund the start-up, knocking on doors and focusing on providing business value through Fusionex’s products.

Today, Fusionex is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is one of the largest and most successful ASEAN-originating software companies in the region. In addition to winning awards and accolades, Fusionex also enjoys global recognition. It won the prestigious Microsoft 2012 Global Business Intelligence Partner of the year award, beating more than 3,000 companies across 142 countries; an award that no other Malaysian or ASEAN ICT player had ever won. The string of awards continues in 2013.

A strong advocate of not resting on one’s laurels and passionately driven to make a positive difference, Ivan is now spearheading Fusionex’s initiative to develop its Big Data product, confident that it will revolutionise the way businesses are run at a global level.

Caroline Russell is the Chief Executive Officer of Boh Plantations Sdn Bhd.

Caroline joined Boh Plantations, the company founded by her grandfather, in 1988 and over a period of 10 years, successfully worked her way up to the role of General Manager. In 2003, she took over the helm as CEO.

Under Caroline’s leadership, Boh Plantations remains Malaysia’s largest tea producer and enjoys the status of the nation’s most preferred brand. With her keen business acumen and foresight, new product development has been key to enhancing consumer brand loyalty, while the plantations are in the forefront of mechanization and innovation in the industry. The company has also ventured into the hospitality industry with its iconic Tea Centre in Cameron Highlands.

Caroline is a strong supporter of environmental conservation, and has served as Trustee and Treasurer of WWF-Malaysia. She was a member of the General Committee of the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and of the Governing Council of Yayasan Sime Darby. She is also an active member of the Young Presidents Organization Malaysia.

In 2012, Caroline received the Malaysia Business Industry Excellence Award (Agriculture Sector) from the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce.

Datuk Rosaline demonstrated leadership and motivational spirit to convince senior staff on the need for reform and modernisation to achieve greater heights.

Endowed with a natural entrepreneurial spirit, Datuk Rosaline worked tirelessly together with her Bumiputra partners and succeeded in establishing new policies, strategies and modern management principles to drive the company towards achieving greater technical credibility, integrity and innovativeness, befitting a modern reputable international firm. From 1996 to-date the company revenues have increased more than two-fold, and profit margins have increased more than 10 times.
The company has also expanded its overseas operations to 24 countries in five continents.

Datuk Rosaline vigorously champions and promotes the liberalisation of the engineering industry, women participation in engineering and business, greater involvement in CSR projects, and the pursuit of overseas projects. She also places great emphasis on investing in continuing education programmes. For exemplary service to the engineering profession over the last 28 years, she was conferred the IEM Lady Engineer Award in 2009 and the BELLA Businesswoman Award in 2013.

Dr Ngau Boon Keat is the co-founder and major shareholder of Dialog that was established in 1984. He was appointed to the Dialog Board in 1990 and is currently its Executive Chairman.

Dr Ngau has more than 40 years of working experience in the petroleum and petrochemical industry, both upstream and downstream. Under his stewardship, the Dialog Group has grown from a private limited company with four employees to a listed company in 1996 with a market capitalisation of RM55 million.

Today, Dialog has a market capitalisation of RM7.3 billion and a staff force of 2,700 people. It also has a global presence and competes worldwide with other international oil and gas service providers. Under Dr Ngau’s visionary leadership, Dialog’s business has diversified across the value chain, offering integrated specialist technical services, upstream and downstream.

Dr Ngau experienced much hardship while growing up. These experiences inspired him and his wife to establish the MyKasih Foundation in 2009. MyKasih focuses on the provision of food aid, training and student bursary programmes. The MyKasih Foundation has supported a total of 167,720 families in Malaysia since 2009, helping them to break the cycle of poverty.

At present, Anas manages a team of consultants and consults in the areas of Change and Marketing. He is also a Marketing Consultant in the areas of Marketing Communication, Sales and General Management.

Anas sits on the Industry Advisory Board of Sunway University’s School of Business, and is an honorary member of Yayasan 1Malaysia, as well as Secretary-General of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST).
