What would my day be like working on GST issues?

Our GST professionals help clients identify and mitigate risks relating to indirect taxes that could apply to their international transactions. They use their knowledge of different legal and regulatory systems around the world to devise and provide recommendations that help clients meet their compliance obligations as well as their business goals.

As part of the team, you might:

  • Research indirect tax legislation issued by both your local country and by other countries worldwide
  • Review a client's accounting system to ensure that the indirect taxes are handled correctly
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to map the flow of goods and services in a client's supply chain
  • Work with colleagues from other parts of Tax to support your client in selling or purchasing another business
  • Map the processes and controls that a client uses to manage their indirect tax risks
  • Use your research to prepare the structure of an argument that will defend a client's indirect tax position with the tax authorities and courts

What skills and knowledge would I acquire in Indirect Tax in my first fewyears?

You'll acquire knowledge of:

  • GST legislation applied to both domestic and international transactions
  • International trade agreements and their impact on import/export transactions
  • How a client's supply chain structure affects tax implications

You'll also acquire general skills in:

  • Research and analysis techniques using dedicated tools and technology
  • Creative thinking to apply your knowledge to individual client situations
  • Communication and teaming with colleagues from other offices or service lines of EY
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with key client personnel
  • Managing a project from start to finish, following appropriate protocols and procedures
