ICAP’s Michael Spencer named Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2010
Diane Foreman, CEO Emerald Group Limited represented New Zealand at the prestigious awards.

MONTE CARLO, 6 JUNE 2010  – Michael Spencer, Group CEO of the UK’s ICAP plc, was last night named the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2010 at an awards ceremony held in Monte Carlo’s Salle des Etoiles. Spencer was picked from among the more than 50 country finalists vying for the title, each of whom had already been named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year in their home countries. The 2010 awards ceremony marks the tenth consecutive year the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year has been held.

ICAP plc, which has been the best performing financial stock in the FTSE 100 index over the past decade, is one of the world’s most innovative financial services companies. Started with US$45,000 in 1986 as an interest swap broker, today it is a world leading inter-dealer broker and provider of post-trade services, handling a large portion of the world’s foreign exchange and financial instrument transactions. It has an average daily transaction volume measured in trillions of US dollars and revenues of more than US$2 billion.

Guy Zarzavatdjian, Managing Partner, Growth Capital of 3i Investments plc and Chairman of the judging panel said, “ICAP is both a financial and a technological innovator and through scale and technology brings costs down to benefit its customers. It has a huge impact and the judges were very pleased to bestow the title of World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2010 on Michael.”
Diane Foreman, CEO Emerald Group Limited and New Zealand’s 2009 Entrepreneur Of The Year was in Monte Carlo to compete for the world title. Foreman was also inducted into the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame.

“The final line-up of business leaders was as diverse and fascinating as it is every year in Monaco,” says Jon Hooper, Director Entrepreneur Of The Year NZ. “Michael Spencer’s innovative approach stood out.  He has a phenomenal story to tell. As a country winner, Diane Foreman was competing with the best entrepreneurs from markets the size of the US and China. It doesn’t get much tougher or more rewarding than that.  It’s a unique opportunity to network with other incredible innovators and business leaders”.

Foreman said that competing in Monte Carlo was a "once in a life-time opportunity."

“A highlight was meeting other entrepreneurs,” says Foreman. “With my business in expansion mode I'm hopeful of establishing contacts that will help to facilitate this. While we all come from such diverse backgrounds, we share a common passion for being entrepreneurial."

Entries are now open for New Zealand’s 2010 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year, which will be announced at an award banquet in October. The winner will compete at the world event in Monte Carlo in 2011.
