About the Kontinental Hockey League

The Kontinental Hockey League is a new international league set up to promote hockey in Russia and other European and Asian countries. The decision to set up the League was made in February 2008. After negotiations and preparations, the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) officially granted KHL on 27 March 2008 the right to hold a national championship within three years. Under the contract, the champion of Russia – the best club – will be determined as a result of the KHL Championship.

The league is divided into two conferences – West and East – and four divisions, which bear the names of famous coaches and players: Vsevolod Bobrov, Anatoly Tarasov, Valery Kharlamov and Arkady Chernyshov. The Third KHL Championship involving 23 clubs from Russia, Belarus, Latvia and Kazakhstan is taking place in the period from September 2010 to April 2011. The League’s main trophy - the Gagarin Cup – is awarded to the League’s best team after the playoff finals. The Kazakh team Ak Bars is the current CHL champion and the holder of the Gagarin Cup.
