  • Fuyao Glass Industry Group’s Cao Dewang named Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2009

On 28-31 May, country winners representing more than 50 countries met in Monte Carlo for this year's World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.  Representing the UK and competing for the title was Richard Harpin, CEO HomeServe.  Richard is one of the most driven and focused business leaders of his time and this was evident during his time in Monte Carlo.  He arranged for an eye-catching red HomeServe van to be driven around the streets for the duration of the event and dressed as a plumber when meeting the judges to highlight the importance of his plumbers and the quality of the service they provide which is critical to the business' success – complete dedication.

After hours of tough deliberation and what the judges said was one of the toughest decisions in the programme's history Cao Dewang, from China, was picked as this year's World Entrepreneur Of The Year.  Cao leads China's leading automotive glass manufacturer, with more than half of the overall domestic market. • Can opportunities be born out of adversity?

A survey of 200 2008 Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists certainly suggests opportunities are there for the taking even in the current economic climate. An Ernst and Young survey, carried out in February, has revealed that despite the recession entrepreneurs remain relatively optimistic about business opportunities.

Over 80% of the entrepreneurs believed that there are opportunities to be exploited in the next 12 months.  Only 16% are focused on survival compared to over 30% of the European corporates who were asked the same question.
