What will I be doing?

'Your career in Financial Services Corporate Finance will involve helping our Financial Services clients buy, sell and merge with other organisations as well as assessing their broader strategic growth options.

You will have genuine opportunities to work on global and high profile engagements as part of a market leading team, combined with significant development opportunities to step up and take early responsibility. Our projects are typically complex, integrated assignments that frequently involve working with colleagues across a variety of disciplines, as well as other professional advisers. Our clients include leading global companies across the Insurance, Banking & Capital Markets and Asset Management industries.

Many of our projects involve international travel, and the integration of our EMEIA practice has made longer-term mobility a genuinely accessible option for those who wish to develop their career internationally.

During your traineeship you will have the opportunity to spend time in the following areas of our business.

Transaction Support (TS)

In Transaction Support you will be involved in assisting our clients in identifying issues and, in turn, maximising value from their deals. You will work hand in hand with our clients to deliver advice across a number of deal types, including acquisitions, disposals, strategic ventures and access to capital markets. Typical clients include Investment and Retail banking institutions, Insurance companies and Asset Management vehicles.

Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A)

In M&A you will provide advice to institutions engaging in mid-market transactions across the financial services sector. You will work with a very wide and diverse group of clients including founding entrepreneurs, private equity and large corporates. You will help clients meet their strategic objectives through advice on disposals, acquisitions, reviewing and entering new product areas or overseas markets. You will learn how to value financial services companies, understand the rationale for buying or selling, and help prepare bidder documentation.

Valuations (V)

In the Valuations team you will be responsible for assessing the value of businesses, shares, debt and intellectual property/ intangible assets, for various purposes including financial reporting, tax and commercial reasons. In the current market there is also significant activity on the valuation of non-performing loan portfolios for various European banks.

Business Modelling

In Business Modelling you will be assisting our clients by building and reviewing financial models. In building an effective model - whether it's to evaluate a transaction, a new market opportunity or for other strategic purposes – we can help clients make key decisions and improve their strategic outcomes. EY have the largest business modelling team of the Big 4, with a dedicated Financial Services modelling team.

Operational Transaction Services

In the OTS team, you will be focussed on helping clients to identify and create operational value from their acquisitions and divestments. You will develop the skills you need to assist corporate and PE clients with effective operational and IT due diligence, integration and separation planning and execution, and operational and IT restructuring. In doing so you will have the opportunity to work both pre deal, in preparing for transactions and post deal, in optimising the benefits of them.

Your experiences as part of the Analyst Programme will provide a fundamental understanding of our Corporate Finance services and, going forward, will help you take to your clients the best mix of skills and experience to address their business issues. At the end of the programme we will agree (based on business needs and taking into account your experiences) which Corporate Finance competency area you will be aligned with to further develop your career.

What training and development will I receive in my first few years?

The three year programme includes:

  • Five rotations, each lasting approximately six months, within our competency areas – Transaction Support, M&A, Valuations, Business Modelling and Operational Transaction Services;
  • Support to work towards membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW); and
  • Internal courses and other learning & development opportunities to broaden your corporate finance knowledge, sector understanding and professional skills
