The Valuations and Business Modelling (V&BM) group is a national team of over 150 people, predominantly based in London. In recent years the team has grown very significantly and has ambitious plans to sustain this level of growth over the coming years, providing fantastic development opportunities for our staff.

V&BM work provides the opportunity for a variety of assignments, from office-based to client-based work; from a short, focussed assignment that lasts a couple of days to very large long term assignments working as part of a multi-disciplinary team for many weeks. The nature of the work is project based and our clients include leading global companies across a spectrum of industries. As no two projects are the same, the work requires a high level of adaptability, flexibility and innovation.

You will have genuine opportunities to work on global and high profile engagements as part of a market leading team, combined with significant development opportunities to step up and take early responsibility.

During your traineeship you may have the opportunity to spend time in the following areas of our business:

Valuations

In the Valuations team you will be advising clients on the value of businesses, shares, debt and intellectual property/ intangible assets, for various purposes, as outlined below. You will learn to deliver unrivalled expertise to our clients based on knowledge of economic factors, an appreciation of the business and industry context, and the ability to get to the heart of valuation issues.

The focus of the team’s work can be divided into the following categories:

Commercial: The team regularly advise companies, partnerships and individuals on valuations for the purpose of acquisitions, disposals and mergers.

Taxation: The team undertake valuations for fiscal purposes in the UK and other territories and are ideally placed to advise on all aspects of tax valuation issues.

Intellectual Property: The team specialises in the valuation of intellectual property such as trademarks, brands, know how, customer lists, copyrights, patents and licences.

Litigation and Dispute resolution: The team are recognised specialists within the field of dispute resolution, litigation support and expert valuations.

Regulatory and accounting: Combining valuation and accounting skills, the team advise on valuation for financial reporting purposes.

Business Modelling

In the Business Modelling team we work with major corporate and private equity clients across a broad range of industries, investment banks and a range of public sector bodies, advising them on complex strategic, commercial, financial and operational decisions.

You will be focused on delivering sophisticated financial models to support the planning and execution of a range of transactions (including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, disposals, buy-outs and IPOs), and applying strategic thinking and quantitative rigour to unstructured problems in the context of business decision making (including capital allocation, planning and optimisation, business case development and major investment appraisal).  You will learn to build and review models for clients, developing strong commercial awareness and an ability to identify the key factors that drive business and financial performance.

Our projects often involve multiple stakeholders and high degrees of complexity and uncertainty so decision-making in this environment requires strong client handling and communication skills, rigorous analytical techniques and smart business modelling.

What will my day be like in V&BM?

In Valuations, your work will include researching companies and sectors, analysing financial information, building valuation models and writing detailed valuation reports. You will typically work as part of small project teams alongside a Partner and other staff, attend client meetings and assist with project management.

In Business Modelling, your work will include meeting with clients to understand their commercial issues, building and reviewing complex business and financial models, interpreting the outputs and presenting findings. As no two projects are the same, teams typically range from one or two people led by a Partner or Director, through to large multi-disciplinary teams drawn from across the firm.

Across V&BM you will have opportunities to contribute to business development and client pitches, as well as to build your internal and external networks.
