Stephen Isherwood, head of graduate recruitment for EY in the UK, comments on today’s A-level results:

“As A-level results are released today, amid the backdrop of a difficult jobs market and £9,000 annual tuition fees, there are still plenty of options for today’s school-leavers, who are making one of the most important decisions of their lives.”

120 places for school-leavers at EY

“EY, one of the biggest graduate employers in the country, have 120 places aimed directly at school-leavers. These range from a sponsored degree course - including a year-long industrial placement - to scholarships and a flagship entry level scheme for those who are focussed on a career in accountancy but don’t feel that university is quite right for them.

“We are recruiting for entry in September 2013 and these aren’t just limited to places in London – a third of the positions on the EY School Leaver Programme are based in our regional offices across the UK.”

Stay ahead of the competition: plan your work experience

“Those who have received their A-Levels and who are going to university may already be thinking about fresher’s week. Although it might seem like a long way off, now is also the time to get ahead of the competition and start planning their work experience placements during their first year at uni.

“Many graduate employers, including EY, have formal summer internship schemes for students going into their final year at university and we are aiming to increase the percentage of interns who are offered graduate jobs to 90% this year.”

And apply early

“Generally speaking, the recruitment process for graduate employers is getting earlier and earlier. In January for example, applications for our graduate trainee scheme were up 20% on the previous year. So the advice for parents, teachers and students is to start thinking about these choices as early as post-GCSEs.
“We’ve seen lots of competitive races this summer but early preparation can make sure today’s school-leavers don’t miss out on a golden ticket to a fantastic and fulfilling career.”
