EY comments on EU court ruling against operator retention of subscriber data

Adrian Baschnonga, Lead Telecommunications Analyst at EY, comments on EU court ruling against operator retention of subscriber data:
"The European Court of Justice ruling underlines the challenge facing regulators and industry players alike as they balance rising demands for data privacy with ongoing security requirements in the digital age. Consumers are more concerned than ever about how their personal data is collected, stored and accessed, so this latest ruling will be welcomed by consumer groups.
“However, today's announcement should be seen in the wider context of overall reform of EU Data Protection law. Many mobile operators view the re-purposing of anonymised customer data for third parties as a business opportunity. In this light, operators face a dual challenge whereby they must engage with national regulators to bring about a mutually agreeable compliance burden while also ensuring that new business models that leverage personal data safeguard the digital rights of end users."
