The world is no longer dominated by ‘developed’ countries, and business leaders globally recognise the potential of emerging markets. The ‘attractiveness gap’ between Western Europe and China is widening, and competition among Brazil, CEE, India, North America and Russia remains keen.
The global economic crisis has not had a lasting impact on CIS countries, and the outlook for investment attractiveness remains positive.
In 2011, Russia’s inflow of FDI amounted to US$53b – a 22% increase on 2010 – making it one of Central and Eastern Europe’s most attractive FDI destinations. Among the Russian economy’s most attractive features were its strong domestic market, high education level, telecommunications infrastructure and labour costs.
Investors already in Russia continue to demonstrate confidence in its market and 80% plan to increase or maintain operations there in FY13. This is further supported by sustained consumer demand, Russia’s agreement to join WTO, and a new round of privatisations.
Russia and the CIS have many advantages for foreign investors. CIS countries have abundant natural resources and strong domestic markets with well educated, highly productive workforces. However, administrative barriers, lack of transparency in business practices and a recovering financial system often compromise these benefits.
