 Chris Oates

Chris leads the Tax Controversy Risk Management practice at Ernst & Young. Prior to joining he spent over 20 years in HMRC, in the Large Business Services office, and latterly in charge of teams in Special Civil Investigations offices, which handle the most serious cases involving tax avoidance and evasion. Since joining Ernst & Young over nine years ago, he has helped clients, from FTSE 100 to high-net-worth individuals, successfully manage the enquiry process with HMRC.

 Andrew Hinsley

Andrew Hinsley is a Director in Ernst & Young's Tax Controversy Risk Management team. He has over 15 years experience of dealing with HMRC enquiries (including those involving litigation) both within HMRC, where he was a senior Inspector and within the profession.

 Jim Wilson

Jim advises on all aspects of HMRC enquiries and his particular specialist technical areas include, company and personal residence issues, UK documentation requirements and HMRC information powers and investigation practice.

 Paul Cook

Paul Cook is a Senior Manager in Ernst & Young’s Tax Controversy Risk Management team. He has over 12 years’ experience dealing with HMRC enquiries both within HMRC (where he was an Inspector) and within the profession.

 Nick Miller

Nick joined Ernst & Young in September 2008 after spending 23 years at HMRC where he was a fully trained tax inspector. He also worked f or 2 years in New Zealand's IRD, and from 2001 was appointed to the Senior Civil Service.

 Rob Brockwell

Rob has been working in the area of tax enquiries and investigations for over 20 years. A Chartered Tax Advisor and a former Inspector of Taxes, Rob has extensive experience of all types of enquiries, including both personal and corporate taxes.

 Paul Dennis

Paul is a Senior Manager in Ernst & Young's Tax Controversy Risk Management team having joined from another Big 4 firm in May 2009.  Paul previously worked for 8 years in HMRC, latterly in the Specialist Investigations team, and has extensive experience of all types of enquiry work.  He has also assisted a number of businesses in their dealings with Customer Relationship Managers at HMRC.

 Rob Kernohan

Rob has been involved in assisting Ernst & Young’s clients and clients of other firms referred for specialist help in dealing with enquiries from HMRC and disclosures of irregularities to HMRC. He has also been part of the ICAS team making responses to HMRC on its recent consultative documents on HMRC powers and deterrents.

 Tom Penman

Tom worked for the Inland Revenue for 16 years including being in a special investigation unit and Officer in Charge of a large City Centre Tax District. He is currently a Senior Managerwith Ernst & Young where his role includes all aspect s of investigation work, International issues including Transfer Pricing and Corporate Tax planning. He has also worked for another large firm where he was head of investigation services and Transfer Pricing for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In addition to his tax qualifications Tom holds an MBA and is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Management. He lectures regularly for various professional Institutes in Scotland and Northern Ireland and writes tax articles for professional journals. He has also written articles on the New Money Laundering Regulations and appeared on television to discuss the regulations.
