UK corporates show cautious approach to overseas M&A in the wake of the recession. Are they at risk of losing out to western rivals on growth opportunities in emerging markets?

In our new study, Competing for growth in emerging markets we analyze UK plc's track record in outbound investment, looking at the sectors and countries with the greatest M&A activity, together with the rationale and challenges of doing deals.

The recipients of UK FDI have largely been the better understood, but slower growth markets of Europe and North America, rather than Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC). The heads of M&A at some of the UK's leading companies tell us their main concerns with acquisitions in these emerging markets centre on high valuation expectations, an effective integration approach and deal structuring.

We believe UK plc is at risk of missing out on market positions in the high growth BRIC markets and should prioritize the consideration of specific capital allocation strategies for Asia as a whole - and for China and India in particular - in order to capture critical market footholds before their competitors.
