When Leslie Mancuso was asked to join Jhpiego, the company was near bankruptcy. Completely dependent upon U.S. government grants, funding was expected to run out within 18 months.
When Mancuso became CEO, Jhpiego had no focus on business development. She employed the unique approach of partnering with her competitors to provide a better spectrum of services.
She also realized that the company needed to diversify its funding sources beyond the U.S. government. Mancuso has since significantly increased funding from individuals and corporations as well as other governments around the globe.
Since its inception, the Jhpiego mission has been to bring high-quality health care to women and families wherever they are. Since she joined the company, Mancuso has focused on several critical success areas. The company’s services go far beyond maternal and child health care education in developing countries.
The company was recently named one of the first recipients of President Obama’s Innovation Award for its efforts in developing an inexpensive and reliable self-test for early detection of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women.
Under Mancuso’s leadership, Jhpiego’s revenues grew by more than 60% from 2008 to 2010.
