The Road to Palm Springs

Brian and Matthew Monahan
Co-founders
Inflection
For brothers Brian and Matthew Monahan, Inflection is the realization of their vision to connect the human community by democratizing and simplifying access to public data. With no venture capital funding and few connections, Brian and Matthew — both college dropouts — developed Inflection’s technology platform on their own, forgoing salaries at different points in the first few years. The company was profitable from its very first day.
Today, Inflection manages more than 15 billion records for delivery in multiple applications and plans to double the volume in the next few years. In addition to two new product releases for 2012, Inflection recently entered into two significant agreements: one with Family Search International to digitize records, and another with the National Archives to handle the US government’s release of images from the 1940 census. Behind these efforts is a leadership team that includes the former president of Match.com and the former vice president of finance for Netflix.
Inflection’s corporate culture reflects the brothers’ commitment to philanthropy and work-life balance. The company donates more than 1% of its profits to charity. Employees benefit from frequent company outings, a speaker series that brings in prominent thinkers from every discipline and a full-time Happiness Engineer. In Matthew’s own words, “Our employees are like family.”
