The Road to Palm Springs
President, CEO and co-founder
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc.
Thanks to a $15,000 loan from his grandmother, Michael Morhaime was able to leave his corporate job in 1991 and found a company with two partners. Today, Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. is an extraordinarily successful software developer and publisher renowned for some of the world’s most critically acclaimed games and blockbusters such as World of Warcraft and the StarCraft and Diablo franchises.
Blizzard’s success under Michael’s leadership has helped transform the company into a global enterprise with offices in North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Over the past 20 years, he has navigated Blizzard through changes in corporate ownership, managing the growth of the company from its 3 original founders to more than 4,000 employees worldwide.
Blizzard is developer-driven — an approach that differentiates the company. As a development team finishes one project, it collaborates with the executive team on the next game. Through their participation in the decision-making process, the developers remain passionate about their work. And it’s this sense of ownership that helps develop quality games.
In addition to its dedication to “embracing your inner geek,” Blizzard is committed to using its technology to help those in need. For example, Blizzard sold virtual pets and raised $1.9 million to assist tsunami efforts in Japan.
