The Road to Palm Springs
Deer Valley Resort
Bob Wheaton moved to Utah with a dream of being a ski instructor. He landed a job at Deer Valley Resort, a company founded on the principles of promoting from within and allowing employees to perform their jobs autonomously. Bob thrived in that environment, and he advocates those principles to this day as Deer Valley’s President.
To date, Bob has overseen more than $120 million worth of improvements and investments in the resort. Under his leadership, Deer Valley stays abreast of current trends and programs in the ski industry and all facets of operations to make sure each guest — from the youngest child to the seasoned expert skier — has the most vibrant experience possible.
Bob holds fast to the founding philosophy of giving every employee a chance to contribute to the operation of the business, and he lets all of them know how important they are to the company’s overall success. As a result, Deer Valley has one of the highest employee retention rates in the ski industry. More than 10,000 people have worked for Deer Valley in the past 31 years, and 40 of the resort’s current 2,600 employees have worked there for 20 years or more. Bob is responsible for creating employee focus groups with frontline employees and manager roundtables. Through these, a three-circle model is part of every decision made: take care of the company, take care of the guest and take care of each other.
