  Three alums named to Canada's Most Powerful Women list

Janice Charette, Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet and Deputy Minister for the Canadian Government; Sarah Davis, Chief Financial Officer at Loblaw Co. Ltd.; and Nancy Tower, Executive Vice President of Business Development at Emerca Inc. were named to the prestigious Women's Executive Network 2011 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100.


Our more than 230,000 EY alumni across the Americas are always on the move. In this section, we highlight some of the recent promotions, appointments and other achievements of your friends and colleagues.

Michael O. Aldridge was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Saratoga Resources, Inc., an independent exploration and production company. He previously served in a number of executive positions with Petroquest Energy, Inc. and Ocean Energy, Inc.

David E. Alexander


Alexander tapped for soft drink maker board
David E. Alexander has joined the Board of Directors of Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. Alexander was formerly a Vice Chairman and Southwest Region managing partner at Ernst & Young LLP, as well as a member of the firm's Americas and US Executive Boards and Global Management Group. He also serves as a national trustee on the board of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Joan C. Amble


Amble is on Brown-Forman board
Joan C. Amble has been elected to the Board of Directors of Brown-Forman Corporation. She recently retired as Executive Vice President, Finance, of the American Express Company, which she joined in 2004. In 2008, Amble was honored by CFO magazine as one of the 25 Women to Watch in Finance.

David Anderson has been appointed Chief Information Officer of CH2M Hill, a global full-service consulting, design, construction and operations firm.

Brian Beach has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Sysco Ventures, where he will continue to lead the pursuit and development of strategic food service opportunities.

Catherine (Kay) M. Best


Best joins energy board
Catherine (Kay) M. Best has been named to the Board of Directors of AltaGas Ltd. She is currently also a Director at Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Enbridge Income Fund Holdings Inc. and Superior Plus Corporation.

Paul S. Bartley


Bartley receives presidential honor
Paul S. Bartley received a Meritorious Presidential Rank award from President Obama. Bartley is the Director of the Program Support Center (PSC), a federal shared services operation hosted within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As Director, he oversees the management and delivery of over 50 services and products to PSC's customers worldwide.

Anthony W. Boor was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Blackbaud, Inc., a leading global provider of software and related services designed specifically for nonprofit organizations. Prior to joining Blackbaud, Boor spent 13 years with Brightpoint, Inc., a global distributor of wireless products and a provider of logistic services to the wireless industry.

Nancy Buese was appointed to the Board of Directors of ZeaChem Inc., a biorefinery company. She will serve as the third independent board member and audit chair of its board of directors. Buese is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Denver-based MarkWest Energy Partners LP.

Kenneth M. Burke was elected to the Board of Directors of EQT Corporation, an integrated energy company. He will also join EQT's audit committee.

Patrick M. (Pat) Byrne has joined AlixPartners as Managing Director and co-leader of the firm's Enterprise Improvement division in North America. He has also been appointed to the firm's Global Operating Committee. Most recently, Byrne was an Operating Partner at TowerBrook Partners L.P., an international private equity firm.

Dan H. Cornacchia,


Cornacchia writes book on nonprofit board service
Dan H. Cornacchia, former Toronto Managing Partner, has authored a book, Accountants on Board. The book explores the rewards, responsibilities and other considerations related to serving as a director of a not-for-profit organization. While focusing specifically on accountants, the publication should be useful to anyone considering joining the board of a not-for-profit organization.

Martha de la Torrede la Torre honored
Martha de la Torre, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of El Clasificado, recently received the Latino Business Award presented by the Los Angeles Business Journal. El Clasificado serves some 1.5 million readers weekly with a mission to "create channels to strengthen and empower the Hispanic community." She is pictured with El Clasificado co-founder Joe Badame, who is also an alumnus.

Samuel R. Divine


Divine's book retells Liberian war experience
Samuel R. Divine, Jr. has authored a book, Battlegrounds to Boardrooms: Life Lessons from The Liberian Civil War to Corporate America. The book recounts Sam's experiences growing up in war-torn Liberia to his successful life in business in the United States.

Robert Feiner was promoted to Vice President, Dell Services, with Dell Inc. He is responsible for Dell's global deployment and on-site field services.

Sheila Fraser


Fraser elected to dual board roles
Sheila Fraser has been appointed to the Boards of Directors of Manulife Financial Corporation and The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company. She previously served as Auditor General of Canada from 2001 to 2011.

Scott P. George has joined Hillenbrand, Inc., as Senior Vice President, Corporate Development. He most recently served as Managing Director and head of the Illinois practice for P&M Corporate Finance, LLC.

Julie Goonewardene


Goonewardene joins AMA Board
Julie Goonewardene was elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees. She presently serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Kansas. She is also President of the University of Kansas Center for Technology Commercialization and a professor of practice at the School of Business.

Karin Hirtler-Garvey


Hirtler-Garvey named Director at USAA Bank
Karin Hirtler-Garvey has been appointed to the Board of Directors of USAA Bank. She also serves as Lead Independent Director of Aeropostale, Inc. Hirtler-Garvey was previously a principal in a start-up real estate development venture and also served as Chief Operating Officer, Global Markets, for Bank of America.

Thomas W. Jones


Jones featured in EY Global Review
Thomas W. Jones, whom we featured in our May 2011 issue of Connect, was also profiled in the firm's 2011 Global Review: building our leading people culture worldwide. Jones talked about his alumni experience in the "Life after EY" section of the Review. Jones is Senior Partner at TWJ Capital and former Chairman and CEO of Global Investment Management at Citigroup.

Joel Koblentz


Koblentz profiled in Directors & Boards
Joel Koblentz, founder and Senior Partner of the Koblentz group, was featured in the Fall 2011 issue of Director & Boards, a governance thought leadership publication. Koblentz was one of 10 individuals recognized by the journal's editorial board as someone who "exemplified board service and who … was shaping the ongoing dialogue."

David Kong has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Silvercorp Metals Inc. He is also a director of New Pacific Metals Corp., Hana Mining Ltd., Channel Resources Ltd., Uranium Energy Corp., and Brazil Resources Inc.

John Lohman has joined McJunkin Red Man Corporation as Vice President, Global Tax. The company is the leading global supplier of pipe, valves and fitting products and services to the energy and industrial markets.

Peter D. Lucash is author of Medical Practice Business Plan Workbook, which was recently published in a third edition by CRC Press/A Productivity Press. Lucash also teaches business online for several universities, including Northeastern University and the University of Phoenix.

Robert M. Lynch was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of Lumber Liquidators Holdings, Inc. He was formerly the company's President and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining Lumber Liquidators, Lynch was President and Chief Executive Officer of Orchard Supply Hardware, a member of the Sears Holdings Corporation family of companies.

Karen Maidment was named to the Board of Directors of TD Bank Group. Maidment is a former Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of BMO Financial Group.

Stephen V. Masterson has been appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Provident New York Bancorp and Provident Bank.

Stuart McClure has been promoted as worldwide Chief Technology Officer at McAfee, the world's largest dedicated security technology company. He previously served as McAfee's Senior Vice President and General Manager of the company's Risk and Compliance business unit.

Edward P. McDonald was promoted to Vice President of Tax by natural gas distributor Atmos Energy Corporation. He joined Atmos Energy as Director of Tax in 2002.

Donald McNees


McNees is VP and GM with Cambia Health
Donald McNees has joined Cambia Health Solutions as Vice President and General Manager of Provider Businesses within the company's Direct Health Solutions division. Prior to joining Cambia, he worked as a management consultant focused on health care strategy, including 13 years at the head of his own firm.

Donald T. Misheff


Misheff added to FirstEnergy board
Donald T. Misheff has been elected to the Board of Directors of FirstEnergy Corp. Misheff most recently served as Northeast Ohio Managing Partner for Ernst & Young LLP.

Al Meyers is co-founder of the Atlanta Music Project, a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide "intense music education for at-risk children right in their neighborhood." He is also the founder of TEDxPeachtree, an Atlanta-based TEDx event. (TED is the international organization committed to "ideas worth sharing.")

Patricia Newson was appointed chair of the Board of Directors of Heritage Gas Limited, which is owned by AltaGas Utility Group Inc. She was previously Senior Vice President of AltaGas Ltd.

Amy B. Schwetz was promoted to the position of Vice President of Investor Relations at Peabody Energy. She joined the company in 2005 as Director of Compliance and Accounting Policies and most recently was Vice President of Financial and Capital Planning.

Walter (Ted) Shaw has been named Chief Financial Officer and Associate Vice President for Medical Financial Affairs at UHealth (University of Miami Health System) and its Miller School of Medicine. Shaw is a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and, most recently, a partner with Dallas-based Financial Resource Group, LLC.

Jeremy Smeltser


Smeltser promoted at SPX
Jeremy Smeltser has been promoted to Chief Financial Officer at Charlotte, N.C.-based manufacturing company SPX Corp. Smeltser, who joined SPX 10 years ago, most recently served as CFO of the company's flow technology segment. He was named a corporate officer in 2009.

John C. (Jack) Staley has been appointed the non-executive Chairman of Hospira, a leading global provider of injectable drugs and infusion technologies. Staley has been a Hospira director since the company's inception in 2004 and its lead independent director since May 2011.

Robert W. Stein joined the Board of Directors of Assurant, Inc., a provider of specialty insurance and insurance-related products and services. He was also named to the company's audit committee.

Barbara Stymiest was appointed Independent Board Chair of Research in Motion (RIM). Stymiest has been a Director at RIM since 2007 and was most recently Group Head of Strategy, Treasury & Corporate Services at Royal Bank of Canada.

Scott Thomson was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Manitoba Hydro. He previously served as the Executive Vice-President, Finance, Regulatory Affairs, Energy Supply and Chief Financial Officer for FortisBC.

Karen S. Walker


Walker helps airline take off
Karen S. Walker has been appointed Vice President and Controller of Virgin America, an award-winning domestic airline. She was previously Vice President, Controller at CNET Networks, a US$400 million publicly traded new media company.

John C. (Jack) Staley has been appointed the non-executive Chairman of Hospira, a leading global provider of injectable drugs and infusion technologies. Staley has been a Hospira director since the company's inception in 2004 and its lead independent director since May 2011.

Jim Waters has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The Hillman Companies, Inc., and The Hillman Group, Inc. He joined the organization in 1999 and most recently served as Chief Financial Officer and Secretary to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

Tim Wilson was named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Equitable Group Inc. and its wholly-owned subsidiary, The Equitable Trust Company. Previously, Wilson was President of Visa Canada.

Doug Wolff has been named President of Security Benefit Corp., a Guggenheim Partners Company. He joined Security Benefit in 2001 and has served in numerous leadership capacities, most recently as President of Security Benefit's Retail Retirement business.
