Ernst & Young LLP helps the families of disabled and deceased veterans start their own businesses

New York, 7 April 2010 – As part of a 20-year commitment to supporting and celebrating entrepreneurs, Ernst & Young LLP today announced its support of a new group of entrepreneurs — the family members of veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Established by The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans’ Families is an all-expense paid program designed to teach family members of veterans who have been killed or disabled in Iraq or Afghanistan the fundamentals of starting and running a small business.

“The US is now welcoming home more veterans with serious disabilities than at any other time in our country’s history.  Many of these brave men and women will need the care giving and the financial support of their spouses, parents or other family members,” noted Dr. Mike Haynie, Director and Founder of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans program and Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University.  “Entrepreneurship can provide both the flexibility they need to manage their lives and the means to provide for their families.”

Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans’ Families uses the same model as a well-established program now in its fourth year, called Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities. The new program targets spouses and other immediate family members of disabled and deceased veterans. There is an online course, followed by two weeks in residence, after which participants are paired with online mentors who work with them over the next year. The pilot will launch at The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University in November 2010. Ernst & Young LLP is providing funding, curriculum support and instructors to assist participants in the program.

"As part of our long-standing commitment to entrepreneurship, and our support of the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country, we're proud to sponsor a program that helps family members of recently deceased or disabled veterans," noted Steve Howe, Ernst & Young’s Americas Area Managing Partner. "By providing funding and hands-on assistance, we’re helping these families start and build successful businesses.”
