BioMed Realty Trust, Inc.’s Alan D. Gold named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2008 winner in the Real Estate, Hospitality and Construction category

PALM SPRINGS, CA, 15 NOVEMBER, 2008 – Alan D. Gold, chairman, president and chief executive officer of BioMed Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE: BMR), was today named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2008 national winner in the Real Estate, Hospitality and Construction category. Now in its 22nd year, the awards recognize leaders and visionaries who demonstrate innovation, financial success and personal commitment as they create and build world-class businesses.

Gold was honored at the Entrepreneur Of The Year® gala in Palm Springs – the culminating event of the Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum, the nation’s most prestigious gathering of high-growth, market-leading companies. He was recognized for being the driving force behind BioMed Realty Trust, a real estate investment trust (REIT) focused on real estate for the life science industry. Awards were given in nine additional categories. All Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® winners were selected by an independent panel of judges from approximately 400 regional award recipients.

San Diego-based BioMed Realty Trust owns or has interests in 69 properties, representing 112 buildings with approximately 10.4 million rentable square feet, including approximately 1.9 million square feet of development in progress. The company's properties are located predominantly in the major U.S. life science markets of Boston, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York/New Jersey, which have well-established reputations as centers for scientific research.

Addressing an Unmet Need

As a mortgage broker in southern California, Gold had become aware of a pent-up demand for rentable laboratory and office space available to tenants in the life science industry. To make that space available, he launched what would become BioMed Realty Trust, a REIT that enables life science companies to lease rather than purchase real estate, allowing them to allocate more of their capital to research.

Biomed Realty Trust focuses on a niche sector that traditional lenders and investors had shied away from. This market requires facilities that contain sophisticated laboratory space and expensive climate-control systems. Many early-stage life science companies do not have the capital to construct the specialized infrastructure they need. BioMed provides the solution.

A Growing Portfolio

Benefiting from the emerging capital of the life science industry, Gold took the company public in 2004 and raised $465 million in its IPO, using the proceeds to acquire additional properties. Since then, BioMed has established a strong track record of financial performance, achieving best-in-class status among American REITs and has experienced one of the fastest growth rates in the US.

Gold, a former eagle scout, attributes this success to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship — having a good idea and acting on it — but also to conducting business in a manner keeping with his personal philosophy of life.
