Lessons learned: CEOs and CFOs tell their going-public stories

Session recap:
Get an early start on the road to going public

Going public is a seminal event for many companies, and the C-suite panelists at the "Lessons learned: CEOs and CFOs tell their going-public stories” session moderated by Joe Muscat, Strategic Growth Markets Leader West Region at EY, encouraged audience members to start preparing well ahead of the eventual IPO.

“You can’t start getting your financials ready too early,” said Michael Small, President & Chief Executive Officer of Gogo. “If you try to do it too fast, something could go wrong, and the consequences of having to do a financial restatement are just not worth it.”

Jonny Jones, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Jones Energy, said his company ran its financials for three years before going public. This gives employees a chance to get used to the rigors of meeting the financial requirements and controls that come with being a public company.

At the same time, executive teams have to make sure that employees understand why these new controls are important. "You want to make sure they understand the downside of not complying," said Gary Wojstasek, President & CEO of CyrusOne.

Companies also need to prepare for quarterly earnings reports, added Dave Boennighausen, Chief Financial Officer of Noodles & Company, who said his company held “mock earnings calls with analysts” before their IPO.
