Driving better decisions in a "big data" world

Session recap

Today’s world produces exponentially increasing information at an incredible rate — a phenomenon known as “big data.” It’s the information available to companies from disparate (and growing) sources – anything from vehicle metrics to implanted medical devices to social media.

But how can you use it to improve decisions? Panelists recommended starting with the question, “What goals do we want to achieve?” Then and only then, look at the data to answer the next question, “What data takes us closer to achieving our goals?” It’s not the other way around.

As the next wave of commerce, big data presents opportunities for new business models. It can become a differentiator, but companies will need to adjust their culture. Incorporating big data into your business demands moving from feelings to facts. And it’s important to have the right people in place — data is just data unless the right people use it.
