Lesley-Ann van Selm, Khulisa The Khulisa Crime Prevention Initiative (“Khulisa”) was established in 1997 by Lesley-Ann van Selm as a Section 21 company dedicated to changing the crime statistics in South African through the rehabilitation of prisoners and offenders. Khulisa is built on underlying belief that criminal activity is often a symptom of the much larger social poverty cycle. This leads to a degradation of hope and opportunities leading people towards crime as a method of survival. To address this, Khulisa set up a series of progammes and interventions at prisons and with at-risk youth built around their mission to “steer vulnerable youth and offenders away from crime by imparting the skills, attitudes and behaviours they need to become responsible and self-sustaining members of their community.” Today, The Khulisa programmes address social-economic inequalities through a number of inter-related interventions which collectively address crime, forgiveness and rehabilitation and ultimately end with the development of human capacity and the creation of opportunities through sustainable employment or social entrepreneurship.
