Transaction Support at EY
Jack, Senior Consultant, Transaction Support
I joined the Melbourne office in July 2015 after moving from my home town of Perth where I worked with EY for 2 years. Transaction Support (TS) is a key pillar of EY’s Transaction Advisory Services business alongside M&A, Valuations, Infrastructure Advisory, Real Estate Advisory Services and Corporate Recovery. The EY TS team provides due diligence services to companies looking to make acquisitions, sell part or all of their business or list on the ASX.
I studied a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in finance and graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2010. I’ve since completed by my Chartered Accountant qualification in 2012 and FINSIA in 2014.
I always had a keen interest in finance at university and wanted to work on large corporate transactions, either at an investment bank or big 4 accounting firm. I undertook vacation work at all four of the big 4 accounting firms throughout my university holidays which gave me a great insight to the culture at each organisation. Personally I found EY struck the right balance between a social and professional workplace environment which suited my personality.
A typical day for me
Most of my day is spent analysing a company’s financial statements in excel; building illustrative charts and tables for presentation in a report for our clients proposed takeover/divestment.
Generally I will spend half my day creating and analysing financial trends and the other half report writing. In between that I will be in face-to-face meetings with CFOs and CEOs, reading information memorandums and preparing pitch documents.
During my two years at EY, I’ve been able to work on some of Australia’s largest corporate deals and takeovers. Additionally, I’ve worked on deals in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth and was able to transfer offices from Perth to Melbourne with little more than a few phone calls.
People and communication skills are very useful at EY as your colleagues and clients respond well to confidence and tact.
EY provided me with the ability to work on the largest deals in Australia as well as affording me the opportunity to seamlessly move across the continent to a different office.
The great thing about working at EY is that everyone around you is talented and confident; people emulate those around them and by starting a career at EY you’re putting yourself in the best environment to succeed.
