Tax Policy and Controversy

  • Share

Prepared by EY Canada’s Tax Policy and Controversy Practice, News from the North is a periodic publication that summarizes recent tax administrative, legislative and case developments of interest to multinational corporations investing in Canada. In this issue we start by looking at three significant events since the Liberal government's first budget in March 2016 that we covered in our last issue, specifically: the updated fiscal projections contained in Finance Minister Bill Morneau's fall economic statement, released on 1 November; the arrival of the new US administration (and its potential implications for Canada and for cross-border businesses); and the government's second budget 22 March 2017.

The April issue also features:

  • The Canada Revenue Agency has been busy. Have you been paying attention?
  • Canadian Government grants and incentives
  • A recent Federal Court of Canada decision allowing CRA to obtain a lawyer's tax memo that the taxpayers claimed was protected by common interest privilege
  • Cross-border GST and customs issues
