On 22 September 2017, over 100 industry professionals participated in the “Revenue optimization: Practical tips from seasoned executives and entrepreneurs” conference hosted by EY and Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (the "Association”), and supported by the Chinese University of Hong Kong EMBA Alumni Association. For this event, four speakers from different industries were invited to share their views on the trend of digitization and their company’s practices on using technology to grow revenue.

To kick-start the event, Mr. Benson Ng, Partner, Performance Improvement Advisory, Greater China, Ernst & Young Advisory Services Limited, gave an opening speech to cordially welcome conference guests to the EY Hong Kong office and thanked them for taking their precious time off work to participate in the event.

Mr. Andy Ann, Founder and CEO of NDN Group (HK) Limited, was the first speaker of the conference. He demonstrated the big picture of how digital have been shaping our world and how “unicorn companies” such as social media companies have been raising the bar in terms of customer experience. In his opinion, it is essential for conventional too-big-to-fail companies to stay continuously innovative in order to survive in this exponentially growing digital age.

The second speaker of the conference was Mr. Ian Chan, Business Development Director, International Business Group, Tencent Holdings Limited (SEHK 700), in which the company demonstrated as a model for all corporations who strive to improve our world through technology. Ian shared how merchants could leverage on WeChat’s ecosystem, big data and digital marketing to optimize ROI, drive up sales and spend smartly.

Following up, Mr. CF Wong, Head of Finance, GP Electronics (HK) Limited, shared his experience in using technology to improve GP’s efficiency. He identified that the strategic challenges of many companies nowadays are to realign with Finance Department’s focus and to improve reporting and analysis capabilities. He then listed examples of GP using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Business Intelligence (BI) to demonstrate the benefits brought by automation.

The last speaker of the conference was Mr. Rex Gu, General Manager, Business Finance, Asia Pacific Region, Maersk Line. Rex started off debunking myths about revenue optimization and invited guests to share their own views. Afterwards, Rex explained the shipping industry’s pain point in revenue management and how an improved forecast and market response model could benefit Maersk Line and the industry. He ended his speech by encouraging the audience to optimize revenue instead of simply managing it.

Following the sharing session was a panel discussion with the four speakers and was moderated by Mr. Nelson Chow, Director, Performance Improvement Advisory, Greater China, Ernst & Young Advisory Services Ltd. To begin, Nelson briefly summed up the sharing session and introduced EY’s Agile Business Finance offerings. During the discussion, panelists responded to conference participants’ questions. They touched on topics such as technology boom in emerging Southeast Asian markets and blockchain applications in non-finance sectors.

Last but not least, Dr. William Chen, North Asia Board Member of the Association made the closing remarks and Dr. Irelan Tam, Hong Kong Vice-Chairman of the Association, reported on the survey results about cost competitiveness from a joint workshop conducted by the Association and EY in March 2017. To close the event, Mr. Benson Ng joined Dr. William Chen to present souvenirs to the speakers and representatives from co-organizing and supporting associations. They once again expressed their gratitude to the speakers for making this conference possible.
