Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheener Public Marker at the Queen Victoria Market

The first people to be hanged in Melbourne were two Aboriginal men, Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner.Convicted of the murder of two whale-hunters in the Western Port area, Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner were publicly executed in front of a crowd of 6,000 in an effort to communicate a political message to Aboriginal people considering armed resistance to colonisation. Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner were buried in an unconsecrated section of the Old Melbourne Cemetery, a site which was later build over, unmarked and is now the site of the Queen Victoria Market.

You can visit the public marker on the corners of Franklin Street and Victoria Street or read more here
