Short-term profitability? Long-term sustainability?

Meeting the expectations of all stakeholders

The EY global network of Climate Change and Sustainability Services practitioners helps clients manage the tension between short-term profitability and long-term sustainability, while meeting the demands of customers and stakeholders alike.

The tide is shifting for global businesses today as they look to meet the expectations of investors seeking assurances they are on track to meet near-term performance targets while understanding emerging sustainability risks and opportunities, building resilience and strengthening their ‘social license to grow’ over the long-term. Clients need to find new areas and opportunities to create material and measurable value in their companies.

As transformational events and trends reshape the business landscape, the financial and reporting environment is being similarly impacted, resulting in challenges for management, boards, audit committees, reporting practitioners and assurance professionals. New sustainability reporting frameworks are impacting the type and form of disclosures and stakeholders are demanding greater and more meaningful assurance over those disclosures.

Businesses and governments need to focus on creating long-term value and explore new opportunities to measure and evaluate the broader outcomes associated with their organizations, operations, programs and projects.

As boundaries between sustainability considerations and mainstream business decisions erode, there is increasing recognition that value creation is not just driven by financial capital. This calls for a fundamental re-think of strategy, operations and what constitutes “value” beyond a balance sheet, including how other types of capital and risk are accounted for and reported.

EY’s multi-disciplinary Climate Change and Sustainability Services (CCaSS) team combines experience in assurance, tax, transactions and advisory services with climate change and sustainability knowledge and sector experience to help clients address their challenges, responsibilities and opportunities.
