What is equal pay?

Let’s start by saying that all pay does not need to be equal.

There are many valid reasons for one employee’s pay to be different from another’s — education, performance, hours worked, responsibilities, cost of living, and so on. Pay differences become problematic only when they exist among people who are similar with regard to performance, hours, location and responsibility, but who are different merely in gender, race or other protected characteristics.
