Costa Rica and Ecuador sign Tax Information Exchange Agreement

  • Share

On 4 June 2013, the foreign ministers of Costa Rica and Ecuador signed a Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA).

This bilateral agreement, which has not yet been released, sets out the means by which both countries will cooperate and exchange information in connection with the administration and enforcement of their respective taxes.

It is hard to estimate when this agreement will enter into force. For Costa Rica, an approval by the Congress is required.

Costa Rica signed several TIEAs (i.e., with Finland, Sweden, Greenland, Faroe Islands, South Africa, Iceland, Norway, and Denmark) in late 2011 that are still awaiting Congressional approval.

Currently Costa Rica has TIEAs in force with the United States, the Central America countries, Argentina, France, the Netherlands, Mexico, Australia and Canada.
