EY Entrepreneur Of The Year announced

Craig Heatley, the founder of Sky Television, has been named EY Entrepreneur Of The Year for 2012.

Heatley was selected from a field of five entrepreneurs who were named category winners at the end of August.

The five category winners were chosen from a field of 16 finalists.

Heatley was the winner of the Master Entrepreneur category. Sky Television was one of New Zealand biggest start-ups in the past 25 years and now has a market capitalisation of $2 billion.

Chairman of the judging panel, Greg Cross of Cross Ventures, said this year’s category winners were among the best the panel had ever seen.

“Every year the judges are astounded by the quality and the breadth of our entrepreneurs and the businesses they are building.

“This year the bar seems to have gone up again in every single category: from Sam  in the Young Entrepreneur category, who was judged three years ago and has come back and done exactly what he said he would do, to Cilla and Barry, who have built hugely valuable businesses that touch the lives of many New Zealanders and are now looking to take their IP offshore, to Brent and Craig, who have arguably built the biggest technology and media businesses we have seen.”

Awards director Jon Hooper describes Heatley as an exceptional entrepreneur with a track record of starting and building successful businesses and creating jobs over the past 30 years.

“Craig is working on a new venture which builds on his wealth of entrepreneurial experience and global connections,” Hooper says.

The five category winners were:
Brent Robinson, Rakon (Product category)
Craig Heatley, founder Sky Network Television (Master category)
Barry Payne, BayCity Communications (Technology and Emerging Industries category)
Dr Sam Hazledine, MedRecruit (Young category)
Cilla Hegarty, NZ Tax Refunds (Services category)

In addition to the five category winners, Sir David Levene was announced as the EY/ASB Social Entrepreneur Of The Year – an award that recognises the special contribution made by Sir David for delivering activities that benefit the community.

Heatley will represent New Zealand as the country winner in the EY global Entrepreneur Of The Year awards in Monaco next June.
