As published on the IRAS’ website, the IRAS has stepped up its audits on large businesses in the past two FYs. GST errors or omission discovered from GST audits conducted by the IRAS will not qualify for the waiver of penalties under the IRAS’ Voluntary Disclosure Programme (VDP) and could attract penalties of up to two times the tax underpaid and a 5% late payment penalty.

GST errors can be costly. In FY2016/17, S$169m in taxes and penalties were collected as a result of GST audits and investigations conducted by the IRAS – a twofold increase over the past five financial years. To mitigate the risk and consequences associated with GST non-compliance, businesses should take a proactive approach to regularly review past GST returns to detect and rectify errors in a timely fashion.

Many GST errors arise as a result of a lack of knowledge of GST rules and regulations. It is imperative that staff responsible for a company’s GST returns is equipped with the necessary GST knowledge. The EY GST workshops provide an excellent platform to view GST afresh and to keep abreast of GST legislative changes. Our workshops also provide valuable insights into common GST risk areas and errors. This will help to improve GST compliance of the business.

Join us for updates and an in-depth analysis on the practical issues and problems that businesses face and how to better manage these issues. Attend the “Common GST issues” module and choose any of the following optional modules:

  • “All about goods”
  • “All about services”
  • “Preparation of GST forms”
Who should attend
