Powering the UK 2012

Bucking the employment trend

  • Share

Direct employment in the industry grew from 83,000 to 137,000 between 2008 and 2011, and 6% between 2010 and 2011.

The South East, Scotland and North West employ the largest number of people in the sector. They are also among the highest employment growth areas, with numbers increasing by 25%, 13.4% and 45.7% per year respectively since 2008.

This strength is demonstrated by annual growth in the sector’s employment in 9 of the UK’s 12 regions, despite overall declines in employment in all but two of those.

As a highly skilled but also capital intensive industry, further investment can continue to create jobs and value in the UK at a time of weak overall growth.

Contribution to employment
Direct employment 136,500
Indirect employment 518,000
Total employment 654,500
