Human instinct or machine logic: which do you trust most in the fight against fraud and corruption?

EY’s latest EMEIA Fraud Survey comes at a time when significant and sometimes unexpected political change is spreading economic uncertainty, presenting businesses with new challenges and opportunities in an increasingly disrupted world.

The 2016 US Presidential election and the UK Brexit vote along with further pivotal elections planned for 2017 across EMEIA have been associated with a period of market instability with fears of rising protectionism applying additional shocks to the global economy.

At the same time, the challenges facing businesses continue to mount – these include the incredible pace of technological change, shifts in consumer demands, the changing makeup of the workforce and the constant pressure of growth.

Given these significant political and economic changes, business conduct is under greater scrutiny than ever before. This new environment presents significant challenges for businesses as they seek to find alternative ways to meet ambitious revenue goals and be responsive to the significant public demand for businesses to be held to account through greater transparency and accountability where traditional compliance frameworks may be no longer valid.

EY’s survey reveals key attitudes towards fraud, bribery and corruption faced by companies based on 4,100 interviews conducted in 41 countries across Europe, Middle East, India and Africa.

The report shows that despite signs of improvement in some emerging economies, more than half of the respondents still perceive bribery and corruption as a major challenge. It explores how senior managers are failing to set the right tone on business ethics and that companies need to harness new technologies to identify and mitigate internal and external threats to their businesses.
