Building on our global commitment to building a better working world through our work with our clients and our markets, we also invest in our communities, both close to home and in emerging markets.

Empowering entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs can transform economies, drive innovation and change communities. Our corporate responsibility efforts leverage the skills and capabilities of EY to help smaller-scale entrepreneurs worldwide who might not be able to easily access professional services. These include small- to medium-size enterprises, some women entrepreneurs who lack a network to help them grow, young entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs building a business to benefit society or the environment.

Here are some of our other programs which support entrepreneurs:

The EY Vantage Program engages high-performing mid-career professionals (formerly the Corporate Responsibility Fellows Program)

Since 2005, EY has dedicated its best resources — our talented, experienced people — to improving the success of promising entrepreneurs in Latin America in an effort to create scalable, sustainable economic value. Through this signature volunteer program in entrepreneurship, we work with the not-for-profit Endeavor to place EY Vantage Advisors with high-impact entrepreneurs on projects that improve the integrity and effectiveness of the entrepreneurs’ key business processes, while leveraging the unique skills of each of our professionals. The program has a significant impact — both on our Advisors, by offering them a world-class professional growth opportunity, and on entrepreneurs and their communities, by helping to catalyze economic growth.

Learn more about our EY Vantage Advisors below:

  • David, as an Advisory senior manager, helped Onapsis, a software development firm base in Argentina, with Human Resource and performance management projects, including the development of key performance indicators.
  • Rich, as a Markets Strategy associate director, assisted Tuyo, a Mexican company that buys and re-sells secondhand consumer electronics in physical stores, with marketing and same-store growth strategies. The co-founders of Tuyo were Entrepreneur Of The Year® Mexico finalists in 2012.
  • Tyler, as a Tax manager, assisted Tecno Logys, a provider of wall-building solutions for Brazil’s largest construction companies, with their accounting processes.
  • Alene, as a Transaction Advisory Services manager, helped Buin Zoo establish improved processes for budgeting and cash-flow monitoring.

Teaming with Endeavor to empower entrepreneurs in emerging markets

Endeavor breaks down barriers that prevent emerging-market entrepreneurs from reaching their high-impact potential. Endeavor identifies entrepreneurs who lead high-growth innovative companies in emerging markets. These entrepreneurs are then given world-class strategic advice, access to key networks and other tools that enable them to succeed.

With Endeavor's guidance they become "high-impact" — expanding employment, generating wealth and inspiring others to innovate. Often overlooked, these local entrepreneurs are now jumpstarting private sector development in their countries.

We are proud that our people:

  • Are part of their international selection panels identifying these businesses for support.
  • Give our high performers the opportunity to make a difference, build their skills and develop their global mindset by spending 5-7 weeks ‘in the field’ working with the businesses.
  • Have supported businesses in 12 emerging economies: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, El Salvador, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Nicaragua, South Africa, Turkey and Uruguay.

Investing in the future with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)

NFTE brings entrepreneurial training to high school students, focusing on those from low-income communities. Maria Pinelli, Global Vice Chair of EY’s Growth Markets, is the Chair of the NFTE board, and she is working with the organization to expand its presence globally.

In the US, Ernst & Young LLP leaders serve on regional NFTE boards in 11 cities. The firm honors NFTE youth entrepreneurs at regional Entrepreneur Of The Year® galas. And hundreds of EY professionals volunteer as coaches and mentors for NFTE students or as judges in business case competitions. For example, through the NFTE Adopt-a-Class program, the McLean office supports teacher training and creates opportunities for skills-based volunteering.

Last year, Ernst & Young LLP established the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Alumni Fund to reward top NFTE students with scholarships and support the Adopt-a-Class program.

Building business awareness with Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement (JA) teaches students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential programs. More than 40 EY leaders currently serve on local JA boards in the US, and our people volunteer to teach students of all ages and to raise funds through bowl-a-thons and other activities. Recently, our South Florida offices of EY joined together to provide financial support and volunteer teachers for an innovative JA education program called BizTown, which combines in-class learning with a visit to a fully interactive simulated town facility.

College MAP: putting underserved students on the road to higher education

College MAP (Mentoring for Access and Persistence) is the signature EY LLP volunteer program for education in the US. The program targets underserved high school students who have the potential to succeed in college, but need some extra help creating the "MAP" to get there. One distinctive trait of College MAP is the team-mentoring model, providing a community of support as students move through the college application process. We collaborate with College For Every Student, which has helped more than 125,000 underserved youth in 700 schools, to deliver College MAP to the students who need it the most.

To date, 1,000 College MAP Mentors have supported the college journeys of more than 1,100 underserved students. EY College MAP Scholarship Fund also provides financial support to students who complete the program and go on to pursue higher education. Since 2013, EY LLP has raised more than $1M in scholarships for College MAP students. Hailed as one of the most innovative and high-impact corporate volunteer program in the country, EY College MAP mentors are currently making a difference in 34 US cities.
