How do we create a more refined view of oil and gas?

Oil and gas companies have an opportunity to engage consumers and find common ground on an unlikely topic: regulation

Perceptions on climate change

A majority of American consumers and oil and gas executives agree climate change is real and should be addressed now. Yet, according to the recent EY Oil and Gas US Perceptions survey, there are disconnects between the industry and the public on whether the industry recognized climate change and how to address it.

Consumers and executives agree climate change is real, should be addressed

Consumers:

believe climate change is real.

say climate change is caused by human activity.

say climate change should be addressed immediately.

say creating alternative fuels is a major step toward addressing climate change.

Executives:

believe climate change is real.

agree climate change should be addressed immediately.

say oil and gas companies want to be and can be part of the solution.

67% of oil and gas executives believe their companies can and should be a part of the climate change solution.

Oil and gas can be part of the solution

Two-thirds of executives say oil and gas companies want to be and can be part of the solution to climate change. The questions is – how?

While consumers believe oil and gas companies should be creating alternative fuels and deploying innovative technologies to be more efficient, oil and gas executives most commonly cited reducing emissions.

An opportunity to engage

Oil and gas executives aren’t surprised by the disconnect between consumers and the industry around climate change. 78% of oil and gas executives say the industry should communicate better or connect with the public more effectively on the issue. Considering younger people are more apt to support climate change initiatives, this issue will likely move to the forefront in the years ahead.
