On 1 October 2013, EY announced the finalists of the Southern Africa Chapter of the World Entrepreneur Awards for 2013 in the Master, Exceptional and Emerging categories.

The awards programme is marking its 16th year anniversary of recognising entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence in areas of entrepreneurial spirit, financial performance, strategic direction, community or global impact, innovation and personal integrity.

The awards aim to honour and magnify the importance of entrepreneurship in our society. According to the South Africa report of the 2013 G20 Entrepreneur Barometer, 70% of local entrepreneurs feel that South African culture is supportive of entrepreneurship, which is significantly above average for rapid-growth markets. This is the spirit that needs to be amplified in order to ensure that entrepreneurship takes hold in our society and flourish.

The finalists will be competing in the following categories; Master, which honours individuals whose achievements have made them world-class entrepreneurs, Exceptional, which recognises individuals who have shown exceptional tenacity and determination in building a successful and established enterprise, and the Emerging category, which credits those individuals building young businesses with high potential.

We are excited to announce, in alphabetical order, the 2013 finalists under the different categories:

Master category:

  • Asher Bohbot - EOH (Pty) Ltd
  • Colin Lazarus - Lazarus Motor Company
  • Stephen Koseff - Investec

Cheryl-Jane Kujenga, EY Africa Strategic Growth Markets Leader, comments, “This year’s programme boasts a great caliber of finalists. We have also added the new Exceptional category to the traditional Master and Emerging categories. This category recognises companies that are no longer emerging but are well on their way to becoming future market leaders. All these finalists are a great illustration of the entrepreneurial wealth in South Africa. Their strength, vision and determination to re-shape the business environment in achieving economic growth should be applauded. We need to celebrate these individuals’ achievements and share the stories of their journeys to success in order to inspire other entrepreneurs.”

The World Entrepreneur Awards culminate in an annual gala banquet in Monte Carlo in June each year, where winning entrepreneurs in the Master category from over 50 countries around the world compete for one of the most coveted global business awards.  Previous winners from Africa include, Dr. James Mwangi, CEO and Managing Director of Kenya’s Equity Bank Limited who took the  2012 global title and the late Bill Lynch of Imperial Holdings, who, in 2005, went on to become the first ever South African to win the global event in Monte Carlo.

This year’s winners will be announced at a gala event to be held on the 6th of November 2013.
