Transaction Diligence at EY
Anne, Transaction Diligence, Adelaide
I have worked in Transaction Diligence for over 12 months, following a start to my professional career in EY’s Corporate Tax Compliance team where I spent 15 months. My role primarily involves conducting detailed financial due diligence for either the buy side or sell side party of a transaction. By providing our client with greater confidence in the transaction and identifying any financial or other risks early, our client can make the best decision possible and mitigate their risks where necessary.
I hold a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) from Flinders University, which I completed in 2012. When I first started university I envisaged a career back in the country where I was born and raised, being a tax accountant and drawing up financial statements for farmers and small businesses. That was before I did work experience at EY and became hooked on the fast-paced lifestyle and the variety and opportunities offered by larger organisations.
For me, choosing EY above the other Big 4 firms was largely a question of people culture. EY stood out to me as having an inclusive work environment and supporting its people in many ways from an active Social Club and health benefits to flexible working arrangements.
When I’m engaged on a deal, a typical day could include
- Meeting the CEO of our client’s company and taking notes in preliminary scoping meetings
- Manipulating large financial data sets to determine trends and seasonality. We’ll need to work out the best way to cut the data to show this information
- Writing up our findings in a report
- Meeting with our client to discuss our findings
There are times when a deal may require the team to put in extra work after hours, however you can rest assured you’ll never be alone in this as team spirit and comradery is always strong. After work dinners can become quite the occasion!
In my short time at EY I’ve been afforded the opportunity to work for extended periods interstate or travel for training. I’ve celebrated successes with my colleagues following the completion of deals. I enjoy co-leading our local Social Club and participating in volunteering opportunities outside of my usual duties.
In working on various engagements I have met many inspiring senior management personnel, including those who lead listed companies. The people I work with at EY are all very friendly and inclusive, as well as being very motivated and hard working. In contrast to all the hard work we also make a point of sharing time together in an informal setting such as sharing weekly drinks on a Friday afternoon.
In Transaction Diligence we help to build a better working world by improving the quality of transactions through identifying risks to our clients. Our deep industry and process knowledge allows us to work with them to create opportunities to any risks and challenges they may face in the course of contemplating and executing transactions.
