EY Oceania announces move to acquire the business of Perth’s leading specialist tax law practice
Tuesday 22 March 2016
EY Oceania announced today that it has moved to acquire the business of Perth’s leading specialist tax law practice, Norton & Smailes.
Chris Smailes will join as a Partner to establish and lead EY Law in Perth. Daniel Fry will also join the firm as a Partner, Richard Norton and Alan Krawitz will join as Directors, along with fourteen professional staff.
EY Oceania Tax Leader Craig Robson said combining the leading tax law practice in Perth with EY’s market leading Perth practice was a fantastic match.
“This will have great benefits for our collective clients. The expertise Norton & Smailes people will bring adds significant depth to our EY Law practice and complements our growing private client service business.”
EY Perth Office Managing Partner, Michael Anghie said there is a strong cultural and market alignment between EY and Norton & Smailes in Perth.
“This was a perfect match, the combination of firms will build on the existing connectivity of both practices.”
EY Asia-Pacific Law Leader Howards Adams said EY’s expansion into legal services was driven by client needs.
“There is an obvious compatibility between much of the work professional services firms do and legal services. That is what is driving this expansion.
“This acquisition will accelerate the growth of EY Law’s capabilities regionally, by further growing the legal service offering, experience and capabilities to clients in Western Australia and the South East Asia region.
“It comes at a time of significant growth for EY Law – we have recently expanded our legal team to cover corporate, commercial, real estate, employment, digital and private client services and will look to expand into private equity and financial services shortly.”
Chris Smailes said it was an exciting time to be joining EY.
“This is a great opportunity to build on our existing foundations to further enhance our offering to clients by partnering with industry leaders and operating in a global tax environment.
“EY’s size and leading presence in the Perth market, as well as its shared approach to client service and excellence, were key drivers for Norton & Smailes in making the move to EY Law.
“We will continue to provide the same services to clients, including tax, tax advisory and estate planning but this move to EY will enable us to capitalise on shared networks, common values and exciting growth opportunities,” Chris said.
