Former Olympian Hans van Alphen prepares EY employees for 2020 Olympic Games
Brussels, 29 August 2018 – The summer of 2018 was a great one for sport, especially with the top performance delivered by our Red Devils and the medals won during the European Championships. EY also shows its sporty side in 2018 with the launch of EY In Motion at the start of this year. The program’s coach and ambassador is former star athlete Hans van Alphen. He regularly visits EY’s offices to coach, train and teach employees about a healthier lifestyle.
“A healthy mind in a healthy body”: for EY, this is more than just a slogan. Earlier this year, the EY In Motion program was launched to encourage employees to engage in more physical activity. Employees who are in good shape usually feel better mentally and emotionally, and have more energy. This is also the perfect opportunity to strengthen company team spirit.
EY is launching this initiative together with the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee (BOIC) in the run-up to the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. EY In Motion was developed with former star athlete Hans van Alphen as coach. van Alphen narrowly missed out on the bronze medal at the London Olympic Games in 2012 and is still the Belgian record holder for the decathlon. Van Alphen, who combines a physiotherapy practice with business coaching, regularly visits the EY offices to train the employees.
Hans van Alphen: “EY In Motion is a 360° communication campaign in which we stimulate EY employees at various levels to develop a sporty & healthy lifestyle. I was honored that a company like EY asked me to become the ambassador for this project. And I'm very proud that we've been able to lead hundreds of enthusiastic EY employees to sports events over the past year.”
Employees who want to take part in the program are asked a few general questions about their lifestyle and health in advance. On that basis, a report is generated with a fitness score. Thanks to the program, participants have the chance to relax for a few hours, and importantly they also get tips & tricks on how to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Twice a year, EY colleagues can take fitness tests under the supervision of the coach. Participants in the initiative can also partake in different sports events. A share of the registration fees for all the events is allocated to a good cause. This year the cancer charity “Kom op tegen kanker” is the focus. The exact amount will be announced after the EY for Life event on 30 November.
EY Belgium CEO Patrick Rottiers emphasizes the importance of this initiative and is already positive about the first results: “At EY we believe it is crucially important to ensure that our employees practice sports regularly. We’ve noticed that people who engage in regular exercise throughout the day have more energy, which also has a positive impact on their health. We want to encourage them in this. We’re very happy that Hans, with his infectious enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge, is an incredible source of inspiration for our employees, and that he is encouraging them to adopt a healthier lifestyle.”
EY In Motion runs until EY for Life on 30 November and will be relaunched at the start of 2019.
