The awards ceremony for the Belarus national round of the 2018 Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards, sponsored by EY (Ernst & Young), was held in Minsk on 6 December. The title “Entrepreneur Of The Year 2018” went to Vladimir Linev, General Director of ADANI Unitary Enterprise, who also won in the “International Business” category. In June 2019 Vladimir Linev will represent Belarus at the international finals in Monte Carlo (Monaco).

The Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Awards, held by EY since 1986 and uniting over 10,000 successful entrepreneurs around the world each year, are among the most prestigious international accolades in the field of entrepreneurship. This is the third time the awards have been held in Belarus.

In addition to the title “Entrepreneur Of The Year 2018,” the independent jury named winners in four categories:

  • International Business: Vladimir Linev, General Director of ADANI Unitary Enterprise
  • Regional Leader: Alexander Romanovich, General Director of Niva Unitary Production Enterprise
  • Rapid Growth: Sergei Vainilovich, Manager of Triovist LLC and
  • Business for a Better Environment:  Andrei Balabin, Chairman of the General Shareholders’ Meeting of Patio CJSC and 5 Element

A special jury price went to Ongan Mordeniz, Director and Co-Founder of Octonion Technology LLC.

The independent judges of the 2018 national awards were Arkady Dobkin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of EPAM Systems; Vladimir Ivanov, Chairman of the Management Board of Bank VTB (Belarus); Sergei Novitsky, General Director of Henkel Bautechnik; and Oleg Khusayenov, General Director of Zubr Capital, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MAX Atlant-M and overall winner of the 2009 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards in Russia. They judged the nominees by such criteria as entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, company financial performance and growth, industry leadership, corporate social responsibility, etc.

In his words of welcome to the contestants and guests at the ceremony, Pavel Laschenko, EY Belarus Managing Partner, noted: “National entrepreneurial capital is essential for Belarus. Such capital is built up over generations and will be our heritage. It is important to nurture and multiply this capital so that we can compete successfully with economically strong and mature countries. To this end, our country needs a strong, developing culture of entrepreneurship and initiative and rising generations of entrepreneurs, and our businesspeople need to be involved in regional and global economic and social processes. At the international finals in Monte Carlo, the winners of the Belarus national round will show the world that our country has worthy leaders with the talent and determination to achieve their goals and create world-level products, fostering a positive image of our country.”

Pavel Laschenko also read a message from the Government of Belarus, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Igor Lyashenko. The message says that an entrepreneur is first of all a leader capable of getting people excited about an idea and organizing a team of like-minded individuals to achieve a common goal. To be successful, an entrepreneur needs to have skills in a variety of areas and be inventive, proactive and unafraid of risk.

Arkady Dobkin congratulated all the competitors and said that the most important result of the competition is not who has or will come out on top. The key result is the impression that managers and younger people get when they enter an office and see an EY Entrepreneur Of The Year certificate, demonstrating that people in Belarus are achieving success as entrepreneurs. Arkady Dobkin added: “It’s great that the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards have passed many other international competitions in terms of prestige, recognition, and influence on the global business climate.”

Oleg Khusayenov, speaking at the awards ceremony on behalf of the jury, thanked everyone involved and said: “We had to pick winners in four categories, but this year, as in all past years, the competition was stiff. These are very deserving candidates, fine models for emulation, and outstanding examples of well-run business.”

Valentin Baiko, Chairman of the General Shareholders’ Meeting of Conte Spa and winner of the Belarus national round of the 2016 EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, congratulated Vladimir Linev and handed him the top prize, noting: “There are lots of people in business and lots of rich and successful people, but what you and your company do to make life better is very important. Building a plant is just business; making money is also just business, but what is there besides money? The answer to that question is provided by the tremendous enthusiasm and energy and inner strength that each businessperson has. For this reason, my wish for you is that happiness and new successes will flow from this achievement, from goodness and love, for peace and for people!”

Vladimir Linev thanked the organizers and the jury and added, “I think our involvement in the competition is very important not only for promoting us as a company, but also for promoting our country, Belarus. We are engaged in development and production. Today we operate in 85 countries around the world, and the first question we get is: ‘Where is Belarus?’ I hope that Monaco will be the 86th country in which we score a victory.”

Pavel Laschenko expressed his gratitude to the finalists, independent judges and the competition’s partners for their contributions.

EY wishes to thank the competition’s official partners: Great Stone Industrial Park Company and its deputy general director, Kirill Koroteyev; the International Finance Corporation’s representative office in Belarus and the office’s head, Olga Scherbina; supporting companies: the Finnish HONKA Company’s representative office in Belarus, the maker of ISsoft software, the Minsk Porsche dealership; information partners: the TV news agency of ATN Belarus Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, the Belarus wire service BELTA, the PRIME Press economic news agency; as well as the National History Museum for materials provided.
