(Toronto, 23 September 2014) EY is pleased to present three deserving Canadian entrepreneurs with the Entrepreneur Of The Year Special Citation award for social entrepreneurship at the program’s upcoming regional galas.

Winnipeg’s Shaun Loney (BUILD and others), Toronto’s Tim Jones (Artscape) and Montréal’s Manon Barbeau (Wapikoni mobile) represent the true spirit of social entrepreneurship. They challenge the status quo through new innovations and improve the quality of life for people in Canada and beyond.

“These individuals set the standard for how to take business from the boardroom to the community,” says Colleen McMorrow, Partner and National Director of Entrepreneur Of The Year. “Entrepreneurs are known to lead organizations that are bold, innovative and fast-growing — but what sets these three apart is how giving back is embedded in everything they do.”

Shaun Loney of BUILD is one such entrepreneur. He provides training for people with limited experience on how to retrofit housing and install eco-friendly appliances.

“Social entrepreneurs play an unmatched role in building a better working world by helping to shape their communities,” says McMorrow. “This creative and diligent community of game changers make social value a core principal of their business. That’s something we can all admire.”

Like Loney, Tim Jones and Manon Barbeau create positive change. Jones brings creative people together in real estate projects that serve the needs of the arts and cultural community and Barbeau combats isolation and suicide among First Nations youth through the power of film.

“These entrepreneurs create social value through adaptable and scalable businesses that have a direct social impact,” says McMorrow. “We’re thrilled to honour them at our upcoming Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards galas.”

Notable past winners include Marc and Craig Kielburger, Free The Children; Greg Overholt, Students Offering Support (SOS); Gabriel Bran Lopez, Fusion Jeunesse; Diane Johnson, Descriptive Video Works Inc.; Scott Gilmore, Building Markets; and Claudine Labelle, Fillactive.
