Dr. Jan Lichtenberg has been nominated to represent Swiss entrepreneurs at EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year™ 2016 in Monte Carlo. The winner will be announced on 11 June 2016.

Zurich, 6 June 2016 – EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year™ is a global platform that highlights the great importance of entrepreneurs in every economy. Each year, a distinguished international jury selects the best of the best from a field of more than 60 nominated winners of national Entrepreneur of the Year competitions. Based on the criteria of entrepreneurial spirit, financial performance, strategy, impact on the global and local environment, innovation and personal integrity and social commitment, the jury evaluates who has ultimately set global standards from a personal and entrepreneurial standpoint.

The revolutionary from Schlieren
In 2016, Switzerland will be represented at the World Entrepreneur Of The Year awards by Dr. Jan Lichtenberg (born 1972), an award-winning representative of the highly dynamic and inspired Swiss biotech industry. Born in Germany, Dr. Lichtenberg is one of those entrepreneurs who tries to rethink the conventional and views new ways of thinking not as an exception to the rule, but as the rule itself. Such an approach leads to innovations that can shape an entire industry in the long run. This is precisely what Dr. Lichtenberg is seeking to do with his company InSphero AG. He has revolutionized testing practices in the development of drugs.

The systems and materials from InSphero increase the efficiency, reliability and effectiveness of the testing process. Highly biologically relevant organotypic 3D microtissues are the centerpiece of the InSphero revolution. Working with 3D models is becoming the new industry standard. The technology, patented by InSphero, reproduces individual cells in tissue structures in a scalable and standardized manner. With InSphero technology, these 3D microtissues can also be produced in the volumes needed to make drug development faster, safer and more cost-effective. InSphero’s customers include all of the top 15 pharmaceutical companies in the world, the largest cosmetics company worldwide and top companies in the chemicals and food industries as well as a number of SMEs.

From university spin-off to industry leader
Dr. Jan Lichtenberg founded InSphero in Zurich in 2009 with Dr. Jens Kelm and Dr. Wolfgang Moritz. The company, a spin-off from the ETH and the University of Zurich, impressed right from the start and attracted a number of committed supporters. InSphero was named the best start-up in Switzerland in 2014, and it has since completed several successful rounds of financing. The company currently employs a team of around 40 international researchers and has branches in Switzerland, the US and Germany.

World-class entrepreneur
In the fall of 2015, Dr. Jan Lichtenberg won the Swiss Entrepreneur Of The Year award in the  “Emerging Entrepreneur” category. In addition to the technology and innovation potential of InSphero AG, the jury in particular underscored the high quality of his business management. The jury calls him an entrepreneur of international standing with global potential.
